Fate/stay night Remastered is a refreshed version of the visual novel titled Fate/stay night. It was released in 2004 for personal computers, three years later on PlayStation 2, and also converted to PlayStation Vita in 2012 as Fate/stay night [Realta Nua].

This version is based on the last of the mentioned above and is the result of a collaboration between the authors of the original, namely Type-Moon studio, and the fuzz team. This is also the first version of Fate/stay night, which has been translated into English.

Plot

Fate/stay night Remastered takes us to the urban fantasy universe, specifically to the fictional Japanese city of Fuyuki. The main character of the game is a young apprentice of magic - Shirou Emiya. Unforeseen circumstances force the protagonist to participate in a regularly performed ritual, in which magicians compete with each other for possession of the Holy Grail granting wishes. To defeat the competition, they summon so-called Servants, in fact being Heroic Spirits - heroes and heroines of myths and legends from around the world.

Noisy Pixel: 9 / 10 by Bailey Seemangal

Fate/stay night Remastered is an excellent official English debut for visual novel and Type-Moon fans worldwide after a two-decade limbo of existence. The well-implemented script, gorgeous 16:9 visuals, and in-depth customization options make this debut of the Fate series its best iteration yet.

The main pros of the game

  • Compelling Storytelling: Many users praise the intricate narrative that spans three distinct routes (Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven’s Feel), each with its unique character arcs and themes. The story is described as deep, emotionally engaging, and rewarding for those who invest time in it.
  • Strong Character Development: The characters, particularly the protagonists and heroines (Saber, Rin, Sakura), are well-developed and relatable, with their interactions and growth throughout the routes being a highlight.
  • Visual and Audio Quality: The remastered version features high-definition visuals, improved UI, and a polished soundtrack that enhances the overall experience. Many users noted the impressive artwork and music.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: The introduction of a flowchart system and the ability to skip previously read scenes makes navigating the game more user-friendly. Players appreciate the Tiger Dojo segments that provide humor and hints.
  • Nostalgia and Accessibility: Long-time fans feel a sense of nostalgia with the remaster, while new players find it a great starting point for the Fate franchise.

The main cons of the game

  • Pacing Issues: Some users found parts of the narrative, especially in the Fate route, to drag on, causing frustration and making it feel like a chore at times.
  • Childish Elements: A few reviews mention that the story can feel juvenile, particularly in its handling of relationships and character maturity compared to other works by the same author.
  • Localization and Translation Issues: There are complaints about the quality of the English localization, including typos and cringe-worthy lines that detract from immersion. Some fans prefer the original fan translations.
  • Censorship Concerns: The removal of explicit content has led to mixed feelings, with some users stating that it negatively impacts character depth and certain plot points, particularly in Heaven’s Feel.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Freedom of Route Selection: Users expressed disappointment that players must complete routes in a specific order, which limits the ability to choose their preferred storyline first.
  • Restoration of Original Content: Many fans wish for the return of certain elements from the original version, especially the more adult themes and scenes that were removed in the remaster.
  • More Detailed Explanations: Some players felt that certain lore and character motivations could have been better explained, particularly regarding the mechanics of the Holy Grail War and character backstories.

Summary

  • Overall, Fate/stay night REMASTERED is seen as a significant and enjoyable visual novel, especially for newcomers to the franchise, despite some criticisms regarding pacing, localization, and content changes.
