Survival horror games from the second half of the 1990s, led by the Resident Evil series, formed a kind of canon that other productions of this type emulated for many years. Although the genre has evolved since then, followers of the iconic works from that period are regularly released, appealing to nostalgia. Among them is Flesh Made Fear, created by the independent American studio Tainted Pact from California.

Gameplay

In Flesh Made Fear the action is viewed from various cinematic angles.

Two playable characters

The game begins with the choice of one of two characters. Natalie has less health, but a larger backpack. Jack boasts greater resistance to damage, but can carry fewer items in his inventory. Additionally, they are differentiated by the events they participate in, which increases the replayability of this game and encourages players to go through it a second time.

Exploration and puzzles

We visit dark locations, such as fog-covered outdoor areas and building interiors. As we explore our surroundings, we complete objectives set before us, solve puzzles that involve acquiring items and using them in specific ways, and most importantly, fight encountered enemies.

Combat and saving progress

We fight enemies using weapons. The protagonists encounter ordinary humanoid adversaries (regular zombies are the least of our problems), as well as more powerful opponents serving as bosses. Our main weapon is a pistol equipped with a laser sight, and to avoid wasting ammunition, it's worth aiming for the enemies' heads. Over time, we acquire more powerful guns, like a grenade launcher. When we run out of bullets, we can resort to melee weapons or flee.

The main cons of the game

  • Control Issues: Some players found the tank controls to be frustrating, especially with the camera angles making navigation difficult at times. Aiming can also feel clunky and lacks a manual reload option.
  • Difficulty Balance: While the game is challenging, some players felt that certain bosses were too easy, and the overall difficulty could be inconsistent, especially on normal mode.
  • Visual and Audio Limitations: Certain areas are too dark, making navigation hard, and the voice acting, while campy, is sometimes criticized for being cheesy or of lower quality.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Comprehensive Map System: Players expressed a desire for a more detailed map that tracks locked doors and puzzles, as the current map is considered unhelpful.
  • Better Controller Support: Issues with controller sensitivity and dead zones were noted, with some players wishing for custom key mapping options.
  • Additional Difficulty Settings: A request for more balanced difficulty options, such as a mode between normal and hardcore, was mentioned to cater to a wider range of players.
  • New Game+ Mode: Some users suggested implementing a New Game+ mode to enhance replayability further, allowing players to carry over items or abilities.

Summary

  • Overall, "Flesh Made Fear" is celebrated as a successful homage to classic survival horror, with a mix of charm, nostalgia, and engaging gameplay, despite some minor issues and areas for improvement.
