Following Seas is a first-person simulation game in which we play as the captain of a sailing ship. We are free to explore the open waters, navigating using a compass, quadrant, and chronometer. Furthermore, we must ensure the even distribution of cargo on board and properly adjust the sails.
In games dedicated to sailing, we rarely have the opportunity to face the real challenges that ship captains had to deal with when they were without modern navigation tools. One of the productions attempting to fill this niche is Following Seas. It is a simulation game developed by the independent studio Whipstaff Games.
In Following Seas the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). We take on the role of a captain of a sailing ship, and our task is to transport goods between islands. Fulfilling this task is not easy, as there are plenty of dangers on the open waters.
The first problems arise at the loading stage, as the game's implemented physics system realistically simulates the ship's behavior on water. We must ensure that the cargo is evenly distributed, as its placement significantly affects the ship's stability and maneuverability.
We only truly face real challenges after leaving the port. Due to the detailed physical simulation of how wind works, we must pay a lot of attention to the sails, adjusting the position and length of the leading lines. Things become even more complicated during storms when waves crash against the sides of the ship. Water freely flowing across the deck negatively impacts the ship's stability, which in extreme cases can cause it to capsize and sink.
The developers also attempted to faithfully reflect the challenges associated with navigation. We are provided with a compass, chronometer, and quadrant, which allow us to track our position and set the appropriate course.
The gameplay isn't brutal all the time, as the game has features that make things easier, with fast travel leading the way. Additionally, we can catch our breath by docking at ports and exploring their surroundings. Relaxation is also provided by the ability to fish.
Following Seas transports us to a world composed of islands scattered across the sea, remnants of a fallen empire, inhabited by dispersed peoples. During the game we take on the role of a sailor transporting various goods between these patches of land, ensuring the survival of their inhabitants.
