FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake is a new version of a tactical Japanese RPG from the 1990s. The game revolves around leading mech squads in combat missions, played using a turn-based battle system.
FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake is a refreshed version of the classic tactical RPG released in 1995 for the 16-bit SNES console. The new edition was developed by Polish studio Forever Entertainment.
The game takes us to the year 2090, to the times when battles are fought mainly using mechs known as wanzers. The action takes place on a fictional island Huffman, located somewhere in the Pacific, which for many decades has been a place of military conflicts. FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake tells the story of the most recent war, which involves two factions. One is the forces of the United States of the New Continent/USN, the superpower formed after the merger of all the countries of North America and South America. The other is the Oceania Cooperative Union/OCN, which includes Australia and the nations of South Asia once Southeast Asia.
FRONT MISSION 1st: The Remake offers two story campaigns, one each for the USN and OCN, allowing us to explore both sides of the conflict. The two storylines are closely intertwined and only by playing through both can we fully understand the story.
FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake keeps the basic gameplay mechanics from the original. So we get a classically realized tactical RPG. The game focuses mainly on completing combat missions, in which we command a small squad of mechs. Skirmishes are played in turn-based system. Wanzers are powerful machines in which arms, legs and the body of the machine have separate "life points", and destroying a given section affects the operation of the entire unit. During the game we also encounter many other types of enemies, including tanks, mobile combat platforms or infantry soldiers.
Between missions we go to cities and bases where we can talk to characters and modify mechs. The game offers an extensive system of configuring and upgrading machines, allowing us to install various weapons, armor, on-board systems and accessories such as backpacks with extra power, allowing us to use weapons that normally exceed the capabilities of a given mech.
FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake offers a single player mode only.
The project is a full remake. While the original was made in 2D, the new version offers fully 3D graphics. However, the graphics was designed in a way that preserves the style and atmosphere of the original.

Graphically Front Mission: 1st Remake looks phenomenal on the Series X, small touches like working windshield wipers on vehicles and things really help to immerse players in the game and its world. The remake presents the game in a different camera angle from the original but allows players to choose how they want to play. This is also true of the soundtrack in game as the original and a remastered and remixed version is available as well. While I enjoyed the story of Front Mission: 1st Remake, the combat made the game feel like a chore. In fact, it felt like for everyone good thing I found with the game, I would end up with two negatives. I had issues with the camera control in the heat of battle, the overall difficulty on default is a tad hard (but there is a difficulty selection if you want to play on easy), missing more attacks than I hit even in melee and all these things just led to a poor experience. I think Id love to play a new Front Mission game, one that isn’t a remake and is charting its own path forward; hopefully we can see that one day.

Front Mission: 1st Remake has everything that a fan of the series would want with improvements to both the visuals and UI. The game is approachable and the difficulty can be toned down if needed. Hopefully this game will sell well enough that we will see more of the Front Mission games come to the west.
