Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark is a sequel of the 2023 game, which in turn was a spin-off of the Gal*Gun series that began in 2011. We are again dealing with a metroidvania realized in the form of a platform action game. It was created by the studio Inti Creates, also known from the Gunvolt series and a number of titles under the Mega Man brand.

In Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark, we watch the action from the side.

Game world and its challenges

In the previous games from the series the world was limited to a single castle, but this time we have an entire demonic realm at our disposal. While exploring it, we jump on platforms, avoid terrain obstacles and traps, as well as engage in dynamic fights with opponents.

The main pros of the game

  • Art and Design: The game features well-done pixel art, charming character designs, and engaging animations that many players appreciated.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The controls are generally tight and responsive, with a fun combat system that allows for character switching between the two demon sisters, Kirika and Masha.
  • Exploration and Progression: The game encourages exploration through its unique leveling system based on collecting Maxim's bones, rewarding players for thorough exploration. The world is expansive with various biomes.
  • Humor and Story: The game has a light-hearted tone with humor and references that resonate well with players familiar with anime culture.
  • Co-op Play: The ability to play in local co-op adds to the enjoyment, allowing for teamwork and strategy.

The main cons of the game

  • Fast Travel Issues: The fast travel system is poorly implemented, requiring players to go through multiple screens to return to the castle to level up. This leads to tedious backtracking.
  • Inventory Management: Players expressed frustration with the cluttered inventory system, where they cannot easily discard multiple items at once or sell unwanted sub-weapons.
  • Level Design Flaws: Many players found the map confusing, with unclear progression paths and poorly placed save points, which detracted from the overall experience.
  • Boss Fights: While some bosses were enjoyable, others were seen as repetitive or lacking challenge, especially when players could exploit the sub-weapon system to trivialize encounters.
  • Lack of Content and Polishing: Some players felt the game was rushed or lacked depth, with a desire for more upgrades, abilities, and clearer explanations of mechanics.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Quality of Life Improvements: Players desired features like audio sliders, better inventory management options, and clearer tracking of collectibles (e.g., bones).
  • Expanded Co-op Features: The online co-op feature was expected but not yet implemented, leading to disappointment among players.
  • More Engaging Endgame Content: Many players wanted additional challenges or modes, such as a New Game Plus or a boss rush mode, to extend replayability.
  • Better Tutorialization: Some mechanics were not adequately explained, leading to confusion about how to use certain abilities effectively.

Conclusion

  • "Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark" presents a mixed bag of experiences. While it boasts beautiful art, engaging gameplay, and a fun cooperative element, it suffers from significant issues related to its fast travel, inventory management, and level design. Many players enjoyed the core mechanics and humor, but a lack of polish and clarity in progression detracted from the overall experience. As such, recommendations vary widely based on individual player expectations and tolerance for its flaws.
