Kingdom: Two Crowns
Kingdom: Two Crowns

Strategy 11 December 2018

Another incarnation of a minimalistic real-time strategy with RPG elements, developed by an independent studio called noio. Like in the original Kingdom for PC Windows and mobile devices, in Kingdom: Two Crowns, the player assumes the role of a king tasked with taking care of his loyal subjects and providing for them. Unlike the original release, in Kingdom: Two Crowns the player can enjoy both single player and cooperative game modes. During the game, one observes the action from the side perspective. Gameplay revolves around two main aspects – the first one being exploration (during which one can acquire gold they can give to the encountered settlers), while the second one focuses on expanding the settlement by erecting production buildings, creating tools for the settlers, and building diverse fortifications, which prove useful after dusk. During the night, one’s domain is attacked by vicious trolls and the player has to pay careful attention to their crown, because when it falls into enemy hands, the game is over. Luckily, the player can unlock numerous perks on their adventures to stand a better chance against the increasingly powerful foes. The game features simple, yet pleasing pixel-art visuals.

Action 15 October 2015

An old school platform shooter developed by independent South African studio Free Lives. The game employs a parodic style to resurrect the legend of classic side-scrolling arcade shooters and the cult of movie tough guys from eighties and nineties. Playing as such icons like John Rambo, Texas Ranger, John McClane, B.A. Barracus, Robocop, or Conan, the player moves through levels filled with typical evil mooks and villains. Although the names of characters were slightly changed, the player can easily guess as whom he is playing. Every character has a unique ability or weapon in addition to the regular set of weapons. The objective of each mission is to free the hostages and escape by using a helicopter. In addition to single player mode, Broforce offers cooperation in local mode or through the Internet. The distinctive graphics, employing pixel art visuals, also relate to the golden age of arcades.

The players take control of two kids trying to survive in the cruel new reality. My Memory Of Us uses side-view camera angle to present the world, and the controlled duo must support each other to overcome all obstacles and solve all puzzles. One of the game’s selling points is a simplified dialogue system based on symbols, as well as its setting being inspired by actual life in Poland under German occupation during World War II, especially inside Jewish ghettos. While playing, we deal mostly with exploration of the randomly generated world, performing various quests and fighting encountered enemies. Survival elements are equally important, though — in the game, we have to constantly acquire raw materials, food, craft various items, and systematically expand our hideout. The title also features an RPG character development system.

As you accumulate experience and gain higher character levels, you are able to expand the fortress with new rooms and purchase equipment. On the other hand, while performing specific tasks (which require heroes with specific abilities), you gain DNA fragments (unlocking more Assassins), raw materials (for improving existing units), and crafting materials (needed to create better equipment). The protagonist quits her studies and returns to her hometown - Possum Springs, in order to have some quality time with her old friends. The place has fallen into decline since the last mine in town was closed, because the inhabitants have been left without work. What is worse however, is that a neighboring forest has apparently kept some dark secret concealed. The plot serves the role of an parallel to human existence, with themes such as death, transience of all things or longing for certain moments from the past elaborated on throughout the story. The player is required to explore (by jumping across platforms mostly) a unique in-game environment, solve simple puzzles connected to it, talk to NPCs, as well as engage in joyful activities, such as playing the guitar or having fun with the in-game friends. The main protagonist of this story is an outcast, who objects the rule of the iron fist imposed by the Queen. During the game, a player observes the action from the top-down perspective. Gameplay revolves around exploring new locations, gathering supplies, fighting encountered enemies, and maintaining more or less friendly relationships with diverse groupings inhabiting the vast space. Similarly to the previous installment, in Sunless Skies a player has to mind his decisions, as even a small mistake might lead to the mission’s end and the death of the main protagonist. Player’s actions affect the direction of the story. Additionally, all the visited locations are procedurally generated – this makes each playthrough different and filled with diverse challenges.

Salt and Sanctuary
Salt and Sanctuary

RPG 15 March 2016

A dark 2D platformer with RPG elements, developed by the team of Ska Studios, known for its original and equally brutal productions The Dishwasher and Charlie Murder. In Salt and Sanctuary we take on the form of a pirate whose ship crashes near a mysterious island inhabited by hordes of drowned and their powerful masters. By eliminating hordes of enemies and bosses the protagonist gradually discovers the secrets of the island, and thanks to the raw materials he acquires, such as gold and salt, develops his equipment and skills when visiting safe enclaves (titular sanctuaries). The hero has a considerable range of weapons and magic skills at his disposal, and the key element is the proper selection, because too much unnecessary equipment negatively affects the protagonist's mobility and special abilities. The game features an extremely gloomy atmosphere and hand-drawn artwork, typical for the studio's early productions.
