Despite his lazy nature, the famous cat named Garfield got his own series of racing games. In 2013, the game Garfield Kart was released, and in 2019 the brand it represented got a reboot under the title Garfield Kart: Furious Racing. Six years later, Eden Games studio known for Test Drive Unlimited, attempted to breathe new life into the cycle by preparing Garfield Kart 2: All You Can Drift.

Gameplay

Garfield Kart 2: All You Can Drift doesn't deviate too much from what the previous production under this banner, as well as other go-kart racing titles, have accustomed us to.

Different characters fighting for victory

During the game we take on the roles of characters from the Garfield universe. In addition to the titular hero, Jon and Odie are among those on the list. In their skin, we sit behind the wheels of go-karts and take part in crazy races on tracks located in three diverse worlds, where we can become pirates, cowboys, or detectives.

Driving model, tracks and power-ups

The driving model is arcade focused and emphasizes mastering spectacular drifts when taking turns (the word "drift" in the game's title is not a coincidence). Additionally, while competing on the track, we need to collect power-ups scattered around it and use them against our rivals. Shortcuts also remain worth using and they can help us win.

Modifying the go-karts

The game allows us to stand out from our opponents by visually modifying our go-kart. We can change fenders and wheels, as well as add spoilers and change the color of the bodywork.

  • New Content: The addition of new dungeons, puzzles, and magical items was appreciated, with some players finding the encounters and loot enjoyable.
  • Soundtrack: The original soundtrack received positive mentions for its quality.
  • Companions and Characters: Some users enjoyed the new companions and their arcs, even if they felt some were not as memorable as those from the original games.
  • Gameplay: A few players found the gameplay fun, especially in terms of large-scale battles and the overall mechanics being similar to the classic Baldur's Gate experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Writing and Story Quality: A significant number of reviewers criticized the writing as poor and the story as shallow, feeling it did not match the charm of BG1 and BG2.
  • Linear Structure: Players noted that the game felt more linear compared to the original titles, which detracted from the exploration experience.
  • Difficulty and Encounter Design: Many found the encounters unfair and frustrating, with complaints about enemy abilities that did not align with the established game mechanics, making combat feel unbalanced.
  • Character Limitations: Players were disappointed that they could not use their original BG1 party for most of the expansion, leading to a feeling of loss regarding character progression and attachment.
  • Technical Issues: Some users reported bugs and issues that hampered their gameplay experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Depth in Story and Characters: Users expressed a desire for stronger narratives and more compelling character development, feeling that many of the new characters lacked depth.
  • Exploration and Non-Linearity: Several players missed the open-world feel and exploration opportunities that were characteristic of the earlier games, noting that the linear progression limited their experience.
  • Balanced Difficulty: Many reviews mentioned a lack of proper difficulty scaling, with encounters feeling either too easy or excessively hard without clear reasoning.
  • Connection to Original Games: Some players felt that the tie-ins to BG1 and BG2 were poorly executed or unnecessary, creating inconsistencies rather than enhancing the overall narrative.

Summary

  • Overall, while Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear offers some enjoyable moments and beautiful design, it struggles with issues related to writing, character development, and balance, leading to a mixed reception among players. Many recommend playing it on sale rather than at full price, suggesting that it may be more appealing to hardcore fans of the series rather than newcomers.
