Agricultural RPG games in the vast majority of cases are maintained in a cozy convention. Grimshire from the independent American Acute Owl Studio follows the path set by other titles of this type. Nonetheless, the game also introduces a touch of unease (related to the looming plague on the horizon) and fear (of losing the characters with whom we will have time to bond) into the gameplay.

Gameplay

Grimshire transports us to a universe inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. During the game, we play as a refugee whose hometown fell victim to the aforementioned plague. Although we find refuge in the titular mountain village, our life in this place is not entirely idyllic. We must do everything in our power to prevent the rapidly approaching threat from decimating the local community.

Gathering food

We watch the action from a bird's eye view and mainly focus on managing our own farm. In order to fill the pantry, we must cultivate the land, plant trees, gather berries or nuts, fish, or finally tame wild animals and breed them (thus obtaining a steady source of eggs, milk, and meat).

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Storyline: The game features a compelling narrative where players must manage resources to keep the village alive amidst a deadly plague. The stakes are high, as villagers can die if the player fails to provide enough food.
  • Challenging Gameplay: Unlike typical cozy farming games, Grimshire requires players to engage in all aspects of farming, foraging, and resource management to survive. The game is challenging, especially on normal difficulty, which keeps players on their toes.
  • Unique Mechanics: The game introduces mechanics like gradual seasonal changes, food spoilage, and the need to preserve food, adding depth to the farming experience.
  • Charming Art and Music: The game has a visually appealing art style and a pleasant soundtrack that enhances the overall atmosphere.
  • Community Interaction: Villagers contribute to the food stockpile, creating a sense of community and teamwork.
  • Character Development: The characters are well-written and have distinct personalities, making players care about their well-being.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty Balance: Some players found the difficulty level too high, even on easy mode, making it challenging to keep villagers alive without significant effort.
  • Limited Content: As the game is currently in early access, players can only experience the first year, which can feel limiting. After reaching the end of winter, there is no further content available at this time.
  • Repetitive Quests: Some quests can feel repetitive, and the dialogue may loop quickly, reducing engagement with the characters over time.
  • User Interface Issues: There are complaints about the controls and UI, with some players finding the mouse controls finicky and the inventory management cumbersome.
  • Lack of Romance Options: Currently, the romance mechanics are not fully implemented, which some players found disappointing.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Expanded Character Interactions: Players expressed a desire for more in-depth interactions with villagers, including additional dialogue and events.
  • Customization Options: There are requests for more character customization, including more animal species and clothing options.
  • More Engaging Festivals: Players hope for future updates to make festivals more interactive and meaningful.
  • Post-Game Content: There is a desire for a mechanism to continue playing after finishing the first year, potentially with new challenges or storylines.
  • Better Tutorial or Guidance: Some players felt that the game could benefit from clearer instructions on gameplay mechanics, particularly regarding food preservation and critter management.

Summary

  • Overall, Grimshire is praised for its unique take on the farming sim genre, blending cozy elements with high-stakes challenges. While it has some areas for improvement, players are excited about its potential and eagerly await future updates.
