An agricultural RPG game with life simulation elements. Grimshire is set in a cozy convention, allowing us to make friends with people from the village and be a part of their lives. Residents of the titular village don't live in absolute peace, as they must make preparations for the arrival of the deadly plague.
Agricultural RPG games in the vast majority of cases are maintained in a cozy convention. Grimshire from the independent American Acute Owl Studio follows the path set by other titles of this type. Nonetheless, the game also introduces a touch of unease (related to the looming plague on the horizon) and fear (of losing the characters with whom we will have time to bond) into the gameplay.
Grimshire transports us to a universe inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. During the game, we play as a refugee whose hometown fell victim to the aforementioned plague. Although we find refuge in the titular mountain village, our life in this place is not entirely idyllic. We must do everything in our power to prevent the rapidly approaching threat from decimating the local community.
We watch the action from a bird's eye view and mainly focus on managing our own farm. In order to fill the pantry, we must cultivate the land, plant trees, gather berries or nuts, fish, or finally tame wild animals and breed them (thus obtaining a steady source of eggs, milk, and meat).
The gathered food begins to spoil over time, so to prevent this, we need to salt, pickle, smoke or dry it. All of this is done in order to make it edible for as long as possible. The key to success is also diversity, as it is necessary to meet the needs of both carnivores and herbivores.
As we progress, we get to know the inhabitants of Grimshire and establish relationships with them. When the plague comes, the survival of all NPCs should become our priority. To achieve this, it is not enough to just fill the pantry. We also need to gather materials and gradually expand the village, thereby strengthening the community, as well as submit samples for research, which allows us to discover new ways of survival.
This is not the end, as Grimshire and its surroundings are full of places worth visiting. We are primarily talking about mines, which can be a source of valuable ore. Exploration is diversified by changing seasons and atmospheric conditions.
In breaks from the struggle for survival, we can devote ourselves to decorating and furnishing our house and yard. We use various furniture, fences or even stones for this, which we can use to lay paths.
The graphic design of Grimshire was made in pixel art technique.
