Hatoful Boyfriend for PC, AND, etc., is a visual novel in which most of the characters are young birds attending high school. Originally, the game was released in Japan in 2011. Moa Hato, a mangaka belonging to PigeoNation Inc., a group of semi-amateur comic creators, is responsible for its development. The title was born as an absurd April Fools'Day joke, which Hato realized in the form of a short Flash game. A few months later, the project was extended and made available to PC users. The western edition of Hatoful Boyfriend is a remaster of the original, made by Mediatonic studio and released by Devolver Digital. The new edition offers improved graphics that work with HD resolutions. Later, the game was also released on mobile devices.

Plot

The action of Hatoful Boyfriend takes place in a distant future, in which, as a result of mysterious events, intelligent birds have captured the earth and the human population has shrunk to a small size. Starting the game, however, we play as a human - a second grade girl attending a high school, who was invited to an exclusive school intended only for birds. She befriends other students on the spot and, depending on our decisions, will also meet true love.

Mechanics

Like many other visual novels, which are geared towards establishing romantic relationships with the characters we meet, Hatoful Boyfriend is divided into days. Players decide with whom and how they will spend time. They may meet with many potential love interests. The possibility of a romance with each of them depends both on the decisions made and on the statistics of the main character, which we improve by performing various activities, such as learning. Each romance also offers a separate ending to the whole story.

Hatoful Boyfriend also has a special bonus story path called Bad Boys Love, which will be unlocked when certain requirements are met. This plotline has a completely different character and deviates far from the initial formula of a dating simulator. This story is a thriller with elements of horror and presents a true picture of the game world and the events that led to the winged animals capturing the Earth.

Technical aspects

In Hatoful Boyfriend, the players can admire hand-drawn backgrounds and images of the characters. Although we deal only with different species of birds, their images can be replaced by human portraits, which better convey emotions and their characters.
