A free-to-play combat RPG with auto battler elements. Hero Wars allows us to control a group of characters and their animals. The pillar of the gameplay are partially automated battles, forcing us only to activate special skills. The game also features additional modes with different rules and unique minigames.
The studio Nexters, owned by the GDEV company, began operations in 2014. The team didn't have to wait long for their first global hit, as two years later they delivered the hugely popular Hero Wars. We're talking about a battle RPG with auto battler elements, distributed in a free-to-play model with microtransactions.
In Hero Wars for most of the time we watch the action from the side. The core of the gameplay consists of fierce battles with opponents.
We lead our heroes and their animal companions, and on our way we encounter both adversaries controlled by artificial intelligence and heroes belonging to other players. The characters are differentiated in terms of unique abilities, fighting style, and strengths and weaknesses. While some excel in direct combat, others are more comfortable on the second line, attacking enemies from a distance.
The fights are largely automated, so the team independently performs the next moves. Our role is to observe its actions and use the special skills of individual heroes, which become available to us after charging a special indicator. The key to success is defeating all enemies while keeping at least one of our characters alive.
As we progress, we earn rewards and gradually develop our heroes. We gather experience and raise their statistics, unlock new equipment for heroes and their accompanying animals, and also acquire artifacts that provide additional enhancements (to obtain them, we need to send heroes on expeditions).
We can also rely on Soul Stones that summon new characters and improve already unlocked heroes, energy that allows us to participate in campaign missions, and various types of currency that we can exchange for various goods.
Hero Wars offers a story campaign, in which we accompany the knight Galahad on a series of missions to rescue the kidnapped paladin Aurora from oppression. We can also visit a Tower, the floors of which we overcome by eliminating increasingly powerful enemies, as well as arenas where we compete with teams of other players.
And speaking of other people - the game allows us to create guilds and join already existing ones. This is important because members of such groups have access to powerful Elemental Titans, which have been given an additional mode. This is complemented by various mini-games (including logic ones), in which the perspective changes (for example to isometric view).
The two-dimensional graphic design of Hero Wars is maintained in a cartoon style.
