Rock Square Thunder is an independent Polish development studio from Krakow, founded in 2020, whose portfolio includes The Lightbringer project. Another work of this team is I Hate This Place, a survival horror game inspired by the comic book series of the same title by Kyle Starks and Artyom Toplin.
In I Hate This Place , we view the action in an isometric view. The production gives us an open world, where we find, among other things, an abandoned town and bunkers or haunted forests. During the day we explore the locations, gather resources and produce better and better equipment. In addition, we use the materials we gain to improve our encampment and rebuild outposts. Although we also have to face opponents, the latter start the real hunting only after nightfall.
After sunset the locations begin to swarm with adversaries, who become stronger and more aggressive, posing a much greater threat to us than during the day. The matter is further complicated by the fact that the only source of light is a flashlight. This means that it is often better to wait out the night in one of the shelters than to venture into the darkness.
We can deal with enemies by engaging in open clashes (in which case we use white or firearms) or by acting silently. The game allows us to sneak behind the backs of creatures or set traps for them and use sound to lure them into snares.
The protagonist of I Hate This Place is Elena, in whose skin we travel through the Rutherford ranch, a nightmare-like land where reality is distorted and terrifying creatures roam. The protagonist must confront the forces that threaten the stability of the world around her, along the way discovering the secrets of this cursed place and its true nature.
The graphic design of I Hate This Place was done in cel-shading technique and maintained in a retro style referring to the 1980s.

Game Ratings for I Hate This Place Video Game.
Life is Xbox: 92 / 100
Quietly grab your baseball bat and supplies and sneak your way into this gem of a game; even if, like me, you aren’t much into stealth, you will find yourself relishing those moments of tension where you have to sneak past a man-made cosmic horror in order to cut off someone’s arm to progress
NoobFeed: 68 / 100 by Nusrat Choity
The game I Hate This Place has a lot of good ideas that never quite work out. The graphics are memorable, the idea behind the game is interesting, and some of the mechanics, like sound-based stealth and exploring at night, really show potential. But an unfocused story, bad combat, slow progression, and technical problems keep it from reaching its full promise.
Gaming Boulevard: 6.5 / 10 by Lander Van der Biest
I Hate This Place has a strong identity and some genuinely compelling ideas. Its early hours make effective use of sound, darkness, and isolation, and its visual style gives it a personality that’s hard to ignore. But the systems underneath don’t push back hard enough to sustain that tension. Survival becomes comfortable, and for a horror game, that’s just a shame and something I can’t ignore. I didn’t hate my time with I Hate This Place, but it could have been so much better.
