Infestation: Survivor Stories is a MMO game with survival horror elements, and a debut project of Hammerpoint Interactive studios. The developers did not try to hide that their game was primarily inspired by an ArmA II modification, entitled DayZ. The inspiration is mainly made shown with regard of the atmosphere of alienation in the game’s world.

Infestation: Survivor Stories is set five years after the outbreak of a plague, which caused most of the human population turn into zombies or be killed by the living dead. After some time, a new type of the undead was discovered whose stem cells can be used to create an antidote for the virus. Since then, people have been hunting for the zombies in order to sell the cells and protect themselves from the plague.

Before starting the game, you create a survivor, whom you play as. Once you get into the world of Infestation: Survivor Stories you can explore it in search of rare items, weapons, ammunition, food, or medicines. Your character gets hungry and thirsty, so it is necessary to have good supplies in order to survive in the wilderness. Medicines, including vaccines for the zombie plague, are also very useful for mending wounds and protecting yourself from becoming a zombie after one of them bites you.

In the game you may come across missions, like: kill a certain number of zombies, find a specific object, or open a safe in a military base, which are rewarded with a prize. You may also encounter notes left by NPCs or other players. Reading them may reveal information about a hidden cache with a useful item. A particularly interesting feature is ability to leave notes for other players, which makes it possible to pass the information about the goal you are after, in case you fail, send a call for help, give someone a mission, or even set a trap for other survivors.

While exploring the world and fighting with opponents, your character gains experience, which can be used to learn new abilities from one of several skill trees. Each of them allows you to acquire abilities of a specific area, such as: distance combat, healing, tracking, or survival.

The locations you visit are based on real-life cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, or Paris. Each map has a surface area of 200 to 400 square kilometers and can hold about 250 people playing at the same time, which increases the realism and allows for making alliances and joining groups. The environment was designed so to present a believable world hit by zombie apocalypse.

In addition, you can also visit safe settlements, where you can find shops and notice boards (can be used for finding a companion for a journey, or giving a mission). Such places are protected by guards, who attack anyone who starts to act aggressively.
