The action takes place in an alternative, retro version of the year 1999. We assume the role of Captain Jack Houston, the first man sent to Venus. Unfortunately, during the journey, the ship malfunctions, with all radio contact being severed. Our hero wakes up on the surface of the planet over a thousand years later. Much to his surprise, he finds himself in an overgrown jungle inhabited by strange fauna and poisonous plants. The protagonist quickly discovers that the local alien tribes are controlled by Necromants, a race of vile creatures able to raise the dead. Our job will be to learn their true origin and find a way to stop their wicked plans.
Jack Houston and the Necronauts is a point-n-click adventure game consisting of traditional elements: conversations, puzzles, stationary locations, as well as search for items, which constitute the core and the base of the gameplay. Nevertheless, the game introduces a number of unique elements, including reflex-based action sequences and computer hacking.
The game is characteristic for its retro atmosphere; reminiscent of the pulp fiction novels of the early 20th century and old fantasy movies. One of the main influences was A Princess of Mars, a cult-classic fantasy novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The old-school atmosphere is further reinforced by sculpted figurines acting as character models, animated through the stop motion method.
