Just Shapes & Beats is an unusual rhythm game by Berzerk, a studio consisting of only 3 members. It was announced in 2015 as a production for PC Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but was ultimately released for Nintendo Switch first.
The game tells the story of Huey and Satury. They find themselves in the eponymous world of Umiro, but don't remember anything about their past or how they got there. You task is to help them get their memories back.
Just Shapes & Beats features shoot'em up mechanics, specifically those of the bullet hell genre. You control a simple shape and try to avoid various figures (standing for lasers, projectiles, etc.) appearing onscreen to the rhythm of the music. Unlike similar productions, the game features no shooter elements, since the object cannot attack. You can only move around and dodge, and your task is to reach the end of the level without sustaining damage. Despite the simple rules, the gameplay is still difficult and most levels cannot be finished on the first try.
Just Shapes & Beats features a singleplayer mode and a co-op mode, which can me played using a shared screen or online.
The game features simple visuals, featuring 2D shapes and one-color backgrounds for maximum clarity. The main attraction of Just Shapes & Beats is the electronic soundtrack, created by over 20 artists and constantly sustaining the pace of the gameplay.
