developer: 38 Studios / Big Huge Games
publisher: Electronic Arts Inc.
Game mode: single player
Even before the release of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the game designers (led by Curt Schilling, the founder of 38 Studios) announced a big DLC add-on that was to enrich gameplay with several new options. Thanks to the efforts of Electronic Arts, the expansion was released within six weeks from the launch date of the base game.
In terms of plot, The Legend of Dead Kel introduces new themes related to the mysterious island at the coast of the Gallows End continent, where the player character must face dark magic and deadly adversaries. The developers ensured, however, that carrying out the mission related to the main storyline of the extension is not all that it has to offer. The expansion thus allows free exploration of the new, large areas, and performing dozens of side quests. Gallows End continent is inhabited new NPCs and a large menagerie of all kinds of opponents.
In terms of gameplay mechanics, the creators of The Legend of Dead Kel remained faithful to the original game, enriching them, however, with a number of new elements. The expansion introduces, among others, three new cards of Twists of Fate, eight new sets of armor and as many shields, 18 new, deadly weapons, and a new kind of underworld – Dverga Fastings.
One of the most interesting solutions implemented in the extension is the system of Gravehal Keep. It allows you to build and expand your own estate, and then to manage it. The developers included a number of side-quests related to it.
Audiovisual layer of the add-on does not deviate from those of the base game. Just as in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the fantasy world of the game is presented in vibrant colors, while the events on the screen are perfectly highlighted by a moody soundtrack.
