A hybrid of platforming and horror is such an exotic combination that it is rare for developers to undertake the creation of such a project. Among the creators who have chosen to develop such productions over the years is independent developer Toby Alden, using the pseudonym brlka, behind the game Love Eternal.
In Love Eternal, events are viewed from the side. Unlike in most representatives of the platform game genre, we will not experience here a camera following the heroine sideways. Instead, the game in question is divided into more than 100 screens representing fragments of visited locations.
Almost every place is a kind of obstacle course, which the protagonist overcomes to reach the next screen. In addition to the classic jumping on platforms, avoiding traps (such as spikes or moving lasers) and avoiding terrain obstacles, we must also skillfully control gravity.
Maya, as our protégée is called, is able to smash rocks floating in the air, allowing her to change the direction in which she falls once per jump. While this in itself doesn't sound too complicated yet, there is no shortage of screens in which you have to perform a whole combination of jumps, time and again falling downwards, then upwards. The longer the sequence of such jumps is, the more difficult it is to finish it in one piece (especially if we have to avoid snares along the way).
In Love Eternal, we play as Maya, who has been kidnapped by a selfish b?st and transported to a spooky alternate dimension. Trapped in a crumbling fortress, the girl must escape from this place and find her way home. Along the way, she meets other victims of the god, who further torments her with visions of distorted versions of her loved ones.
The graphic design of Love Eternal was made using the pixel art technique.

Game Ratings for Love Eternal Video Game.
Noisy Pixel: 7.5 / 10
Love Eternal is a punishing psychological horror platformer built around a single gravity reversal mechanic that pushes precision to its limits. Brika crafts a stark, unsettling world where every room feels like a trial of patience and mastery, rewarding persistence with genuine satisfaction. While its minimalist design and focused mechanics create intense, memorable platforming highs, limited quality of life features, occasional technical issues, and a steep difficulty curve may test even seasoned players.
Nintendo Life: 6 / 10 by Jess Elizabeth Reed
The platforming elements of Love Eternal are delightfully frustrating fun with a limited set of mechanics put to creative and clean use. Multiple levels had me holding my breath, gritting my teeth, and cursing the wayward god who founded the whole endeavour. The hand-drawn levels are as beautiful as their challenges are frustrating. Unfortunately, an overly ambitious narrative coupled with a strange mid-game shift mars the game's myriad charms.
Try Hard Guides: 8 / 10 by Erik Hodges
LOVE ETERNAL is strange, avant-garde, and downright hard, but it never feels cheap or unfair in its challenge. Its experimental storytelling is eerie and engaging, and the controls of the game are buttery-smooth and precise, making for platforming that’s as fun to play as it is challenging.
