Aaru's Awakening is a dynamic platform game developed by the indie studio Lumenox Games. The game takes the players to a fantasy world that exists thanks to the balance between the domains that can be found there: Dawn, Dusk, Day, and Night. At some point, however, Night began its expansion and started to take over the place of the remaining domains, bringing the world at the edge of destruction.
Aaru’s Awakening for PC, PS3 and PS4 was initially a project of a group of Icelandic students that won them the first place in the Icelandic Gaming Industry Game Creator competition. This victory made them turn the project into a full game and develop it as Lumenox Games studio. Aaru’s Awakening is an arcade platform game that has unique, hand-drawn 2D visuals.
The game takes place in a fantasy world known as Lumenox. Its existence is possible only thanks to the balance between the four domains that can be found there: Dawn, Dusk, Day, and Night. When Night began its expansion and started taking over the place of the remaining domains, Lumenox was brought to the brink of destruction. As a last resort, Dawn sents out its champion, Aaru, to battle.
Even though the plot may not seem that engaging, it plays a bigger role that one could assume. Developers created a climatic narration that shows us the story as we go through the game’s maps. All of them are located in four domains of Lumenox (including Night), which makes our adventure more diverse.
Gamplay in Aaru’s Awakening for PC, PS3 and PS4 focuses on jumping from one platform to another, fighting with the enemies, and solving simple puzzles and riddles. Aaru can use two special powers, teleportation on short distances and charge, to gain access to areas normally unaccesible and to destroy some of the obstacles.
As it was previously mentioned, Aaru’s Awakening for PC, PS3 and PS4 has hand-drawn 2D visuals inspired by the animated movies from the 1970’s. The game offers only a single player campaign.

I can't believe some people out there, in the depths of Internet. They start a game with ranting about lack of innovation in games, and end it with a game of the most formulaic multiplayers. But when they actually get innovation, they frown.

There are already a ton of platformers to choose from on both of Sony's current home consoles, but the good news is that Aaru's Awakening is free to anyone with PlayStation Plus for the time being. If you fancy something artsy and with some challenging gameplay, then we think that you should consider giving it a shot. Everyone else will want to pass on this one.

All of this will likely be tremendously appealing to a particular sort of player, and Aaru's Awakening clearly deserves a certain recognition for putting its own twist on the unforgiving 2D platformer. But if you are going to enter this world, know that the extrinsic rewards are few. The challenge is really all there is. The gods give only what they will, and are unconcerned with whether mortals find it sufficient.
