Metal Slug Defense is a spin-off version of the cult series of 2D shooters started in the mid-1990s on the Neo Geo console and arcade machines. Metal Slug Defense was developed by SNK studio and the game is a tower-defense strategy. The title was created with mobile platforms in mind, but there is also a PC version.
The action of the game takes place in the unspecified future, a few years after defeating the main antagonist of the series, General Morden. Meanwhile, according to military intelligence, the villain is still alive - the remaining rebel troops allied with aliens and are now planning another invasion in different parts of the world. To prevent a tragedy, special troops are sent to the danger zones to face the invaders.
As befits a tower-defense game, Metal Slug Defense focuses mainly on combat - the players' task is to defeat the enemy troops and destroy their base (while protecting their own). Players have access to a wide range of 60 units, using different types of weapons, such as grenades, rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers, and the titular Metal Slug tanks. We can also build various barricades and fortifications. During the battles, we send units to fight, and each of them has its energy bar - when it is fully charged, that unit can use a special and more powerful attack. Between the fights, we can buy new units, base improvements and various items that will help us in the game. During the campaign, we visit more than 100 different sceneries in different parts of the world, fighting with rebel soldiers, aliens, and even mummies and zombies.
Metal Slug Defense also offers the multiplayer mode, in which we can fight with friends in "1 on 1" or "2 on 2" mode.
As for the graphics, Metal Slug Defense is maintained in an old-school pixeled graphic style, and the action is shown in a classic 2D side view. This brings the game closer to the past installments, and at the same time brings some freshness to the tower-defense genre, where most of the games are shown in the top-down view.
Metal Slug Defense is available in a free-to-play model with microtransactions. However, we don't need to spend real money to complete the game.
