VGChartz: 7.5 / 10 by Paul Broussard

Consistently amazing combat isn’t a prerequisite to succeed in the Metroidvania genre, and Momodora: Moonlit Farewell succeeds at enough other things to ultimately make it a solid recommendation for fans of the genre. It understands good item-based progression, makes exploration rewarding without undervaluing its powerups, and presents a varied & interesting world that invites players back and makes them want to explore more.

A great way to end the Momodra series on a high point

Digital Chumps: 8.3 / 10 by Will Silberman

Momodora: Moonlit Farewell is beautifully simple, perhaps to a fault. Switch owners who take the chance on this 8-hour metroidvania will enjoy its fluid combat, glittery spritework, and mild platforming. I'm sad to see the Momodora series conclude, but I have hopes that developers Bombservice continue to design gorgeous metroidvanias.

The main cons of the game

  • Simplistic Combat: Many reviews mention that the combat can feel repetitive and overly simplistic, often leading to a "spammy" playstyle rather than requiring skillful execution.
  • Difficulty Balance: The game is generally perceived as easier compared to its predecessor, "Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight," with some bosses lacking challenge.
  • Linear Level Design: Several players found the level design less engaging and more linear than previous entries, with fewer memorable landmarks and less emphasis on platforming.
  • Inconsistent Mechanics: Some players noted issues with dodging mechanics and hitboxes, leading to frustrating combat experiences in certain scenarios.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Depth in Boss Fights: Reviewers expressed disappointment in the simplicity of boss mechanics, wishing for more complex and varied attack patterns.
  • Platforming Challenges: The game lacks the platforming elements that were present in earlier installments, which some fans missed.

  • Character Development: While the story has more dialogue and characters, some players felt that the character interactions lacked depth and personality compared to earlier games in the series.

Summary

  • In summary, "Momodora: Moonlit Farewell" is a visually appealing and enjoyable entry in the series, but it suffers from a lack of challenge and depth in gameplay compared to its predecessors. While it offers a charming experience, many fans recommend previous titles for a more engaging and challenging metroidvania experience.
