The game takes place in the ruins of the city modeled on the West Loop district in Chicago, which means dense buildings and numerous high-rise buildings, including massive skyscrapers.

A situation in which life a sniper hidden two kilometers away kills us never happens, because at such a distance the target is obstructed by different structures. Voice chat facilitates communication with other players. Well-organized groups can occupy buildings and repurpose them to secure fortresses.
Nether provides an option to set up dedicated servers. Their administrators can enable the hardcore mode in which death is final, and forces the players to start from scratch. For the lovers of less extreme experiences, there are also server where after the death of the characters results in loss of items only, while retaining the skills and experience points.
