In 2008, OFF, a free RPG game, was released. It was created using the RPG Maker 2003 tool. Years later, the developer known as Mortis Ghost (one of the original authors) entered a collaboration with Fangamer. They prepared a remaster of this production with the same title.

Gameplay

In OFF we watch the action from a bird's eye view.

Adventure with a baseball bat in hand

We are controlling a baseball player and our task is to "cleanse the world". This involves the need to explore a series of locations and get rid of the ghosts haunting them. Our actions are closely observed by a cat named Judge.

The adventure leads us through a post office, a library, a shopping center, an amusement park, and a factory. The game world is divided into zones protected by Guardians and we must defeat them, thereby gaining so-called zodiac cards and gaining access to subsequent locations. In each of them, various missions await completion, and environmental and logical puzzles await solving.

Combat system

Of course, there are also opponents we have to defeat. The game approaches the combat system in an unusual way, because although it was inspired by jRPG games, the battles are not turn-based. Instead, we make the next moves after our character has "cooled down". The game also allows us to automate battles.

Digital Chumps: 9.9 / 10 by Will Silberman

The best RPGs impart lasting emotions on the player over the duration of the playthrough. In between its turn-based battles, light character building, and dark symbolism, OFF imprints guilt, horror, and confusion on the player in ways few games successfully pull off. OFF is an RPG that everyone should experience blindly, especially those who appreciate a haunting journey with blips of the bizarre. This remaster is not just a should-play of 2025, but a must-play of the decade. If you want OFF's rainbow, you must have the rain.

Gamer Social Club: 7 / 10 by Sean "KingOTheCask" Richards

Overall, I found OFF, while being a very unique game, not something that I would ever return to. There is an absolute GLUT of turn-based RPGs out there – many of which I would recommend before OFF. That being said, if you are really looking for something that does break the mold of your standard RPG, then OFF might be the exact game that you’re looking for.

GamingTrend: 70 / 100 by Olivia Davies

Overall, OFF is definitely worth the purchase just for the experience you have whilst playing it. It’s wholly unique and has you contemplating your actions and its world throughout and way after the credits roll. Whilst it may just have a basic battle system and puzzles, OFF is a masterclass in feeling and atmosphere, and this new remaster makes it even more accessible to a modern audience.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty Level: Some players find the game to be too easy, especially compared to the original. While the new bosses offer a challenge, the overall gameplay can feel less demanding, particularly for veterans of the original game.
  • Pacing Issues: Some reviews mention that the pacing can feel off, especially with the introduction of new bosses that may disrupt the flow of the game.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Original Soundtrack Option: Many players express a desire for an option to toggle between the new and original soundtracks, as the nostalgia for the original music is strong.
  • More Challenging Gameplay: Some players wish for additional difficulty settings or more challenging encounters, as they feel the game does not provide enough of a challenge compared to the original version.
  • Expanded Lore or Content: While new bosses are appreciated, some players feel that the new content does not significantly expand the lore or narrative depth of the game, leaving some wanting more substantial additions.
