Release Date: October 24, 2025
A new installment of the arcade-puzzle series from Bandai Namco for the first time in 14 years. The gameplay in Once Upon a Katamari is about rolling the titular ball in various locations scattered in time and space, sticking smaller objects to it. The game also features a multiplayer mode.
The Katamari series consists of rather unusual action-puzzle games that have gathered a dedicated fanbase over the years. Once Upon a Katamari is the first completely new installment in this series in 14 years. It was developed by Rengame studio and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, which oversees the brand.
Similar to previous titles under this banner, in Once Upon a Katamari events are viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP).
The gameplay is based on a proven formula, where we roll the titular ball, to which various items and objects stick. New tools, such as a magnet that attracts nearby elements of the environment, assist us in this task.
Over time, our Katamari grows, which is important because only objects smaller than it can attach to it. Care must be taken to avoid terrain obstacles and fast-moving objects, as collisions with them result in parts of our ball falling off.
The adventure takes us through various locations scattered not only in space but also in time. We have the opportunity to visit places such as the land of the Jurassic period or the Ice Age, as well as imperial Japan.
A special mention goes to the characters we embody. Prince is the one leading them, but we also have access to 68 of his cousins. Additionally, the game allows us to create our own character from scratch.
In Once Upon a Katamari our primary goal is to organize the chaos caused by the King of the Universe. While playing with a certain scroll, the ruler accidentally destroyed the Earth and the stars, and it is our task to gather the items scattered across time and space.
Once Upon a Katamari allows for both solo gameplay and multiplayer fun over the Internet. For the latter, a mode called KatamariBall has been prepared, where we roll our Katamari, being able to attach not only elements of the environment but also... other players. We can also hone our skills by playing alongside AI bots.

Game Ratings for Once Upon a Katamari Video Game.
Twisted Voxel: 8 / 10 by Salal Awan
Once Upon a Katamari successfully delivers the series' signature, quirky charm through its inventive time-travel theme, deep customization, and chaotic new multiplayer mode. While it retains the core, addictive fun, the familiar, clunky camera controls and the King's interruptions persist, making the nostalgic experience feel polished but not entirely modernized.
MKAU Gaming: 7 / 10 by Ashley Barnett-Cosgrove
“Once Upon A Katamari” has a familiar gameplay loop that will be either a positive or a negative, depending on how you feel towards the franchise. New additions to the formula, including boosts, customisation, music, and multiplayer, add something refreshing to the package. With difficulty feeling a bit harder, it does impact the cozy, relaxing feeling I had come to expect from the franchise. Although it’s not so hard that it becomes a deal breaker, it is something that needs to be considered when you sit down to play. Overall, “Once Upon A Katamari” rolls above its weight and is a fun game. Whether you are new or old to the franchise, you will have a ball of a time.
Kakuchopurei: 80 / 100 by Jonathan Toyad
Once Upon A Katamari goes back to the good old days of PS2 weird-ass puzzle gaming where ideas were kept simple. With a fresh take on levels -now dished out in different eras- and a slew of new mechanics like power-ups and different ball types, this Katamari-type game is still a joy to play through from start to finish. Plus, there are multiplayer competitive modes that help lengthen the title's replay value if you're done with the many, many single player challenges.
