Release Date: November 20, 2025
A remastered version of the FPS from 1997, set in the Wild West. Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster was developed by Nightdive Studios. It offers much improved graphics and better user interface. There are also modern controls, support for 120fps & 4K and additional content.
In 1997, Lucas Arts studio released a western-themed FPS game titled Outlaws. In 1998, it received a mission pack called Handful of Missions. Years later, this project was undertaken by the Nightdive Studios team, known for refreshing beloved classics. The result of this venture is the remastered version enriched with additional content, sold under the title Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster.
Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster stands out from the original mainly due to improved graphics. The developers focused especially on the graphics of weapons, characters and enemies, and also increased the resolution of textures and cutscenes. The whole thing now operates at a maximum of 120 frames per second and in 4K mode.
Additionally, the interface was modernized (and expanded with a new weapon selection menu) and the controls were adapted to modern controllers. The icing on the cake are behind-the-scenes production materials, which we can buy for nuggets of gold earned during the game.
Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster allows us to follow the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). The game is divided into missions, during which we explore diverse locations, perform tasks set before us, and eliminate hordes of enemies.
We are given access to an arsenal that includes a 45 caliber revolver, a 44 caliber rifle with a scope, a 10 caliber shotgun, and a 12 caliber sawed-off shotgun. Given that our opponents outnumber us, more often than not, a better idea than charging at them with a battle cry on our lips is to use cover and methodically eliminate targets that stand in our way.
Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster takes us to the Wild West. The main character of the game is Sheriff James Anderson, who was not given the chance to enjoy a peaceful retirement. When his wife was murdered by bandits and his daughter was kidnapped, the protagonist had no choice but to take up arms and pursue the criminals. His goal is to save the only thing he has left in the world, and to bring justice to anyone who has harmed his family.

Impulsegamer: 3.9 / 5
For those of us who played Outlaws when it first came out, it's a great treat to jump back into that world (especially without having to dust off the old CD and fiddle with compatibility modes). For those new to the game, the retro charm of the gameplay and the subject matter may be a fresh change from the standard sci-fi or World War shooter fare that tends to dominate the FPS category. Yes, there are some frustrating issues with the game… but those are simply elements we had to put up with back in the day, and the extra content provided here helps give you something to explore while your emotions cool from falling off a ledge or getting stuck figuring out where you need to go next. Worth a look for fans of the original release or for those who love a bit of retro gaming… maybe wait for a sale, but even at full price, there's a lot here to enjoy or reminisce about.

Back in 1997, Outlaws did a great job of turning classic Western tropes into a video game. Still, it’s hard to ignore that the gameplay and design are stilted and simplistic compared to modern shooters. Fans of the original will certainly appreciate the happy jolt of recognition, and there’s a bit of value in new gamers walking through the time machine to a much simpler period in technology. All that aside, Outlaws’ fun doesn’t last very long, even remastered.

Nightdive Studios did a wonderful job with Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster. This spaghetti western, first-person shooter from 1997 may seem goofy and harmless now, but that's what makes it so fun to play. Unfortunately, the credits roll too soon.
