Another installment in the popular Overlord series, launched in 2007 by Triumph Software. The new game, this time developed by the Codemasters company, abandons the third-person perspective in favor of an isometric view, a distinctive feature of the hack-and-slash genre. Furthermore, the game now features four heroes instead of one, including: warrior, necromancer, dwarf, and dark elf.

Overlord: Fellowship of Evil for PC is the next installment of the Overlord series, which started back in 2007. Unlike the previous productions made by the Triumph studio, this time we can play not as just one, but four different dark lords; the basic mechanics have also changed, as the title is no longer a TPP action game – it has been designed as an RPG, where we experience the action with a camera located above the field of battle.

In Overlord: Fellowship of Evil we, once again, step into the shoes of an antihero , who this time operates from the nether world. It is our main ambition to unleash monstrous evil, forcing the world of the living to fall to their knees, and making us its dark master; the game offers four different candidates for this prestigious title – Inferna, the brutal warrior, Malady, the necromancer, Hakon, the dwarf, and Cryos, the dark elf. Each of the heroes has their own unique abilities which they can use in a hassle, we are also aided by the minions during our playthrough; the minions have several different classes – the green ones poison enemies, the red ones use explosives, while the blue ones are focused on defending our character. The gameplay revolves around travelling through the world, fighting enemies and solving various puzzles. The campaign can be beaten in single player mode; however, the title features a co-op mode for up to four players, playing via the internet or LAN.

Destructoid: 1.5 / 10 by Jed Whitaker

Overlord: Fellowship of Evil is an experience I'll be glad to forget: a mindless, tedious, boring excuse for a game that tortures the player throughout, much like the characters in the game torturing the poor souls of the innocent. Maybe that is the point and Codemasters has done an amazing piece of art. As if.

GamingTrend: 20 / 100 by Ron Burke

Overlord: Fellowship of Evil is, by a wide margin, one of the worst games of the year. I don't know what the team at Codemaster was thinking, but they've wrecked everything Triumph Studios had built. Either give it back, or let this franchise die — it has suffered enough, as have we.

TechRaptor: 1 / 10 by Samuel Guglielmo

Having zero redeeming qualities is the best compliment I can give Overlord: Fellowship of Evil. It is, without a doubt, the worst video game I have ever played in my life and the only reason I'm not giving it a 0 is because, technically, it runs.

The main pros of the game

  • Occasional Humor: Some reviews mention that the game retains flashes of the original series' dark humor and wit, particularly in the writing by Rhianna Pratchett.
  • Co-op Potential: There are mentions of the game being moderately fun when played with friends, particularly in couch co-op settings, although this is not universally agreed upon.
  • Visuals and Concept: Some players appreciate the initial concept of playing as a Netherghoul and the potential for a unique gameplay style.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many reviews criticize the combat and overall gameplay as dull, repetitive, and lacking depth, with combat often devolving into mindless button-mashing.
  • Poor Minion Control: Players express frustration at the limited control over minions, which were a central feature of the original games. The minions now have reduced autonomy and purpose.
  • Technical Issues: Numerous bugs, connectivity issues, and poor controls are highlighted, contributing to an overall frustrating experience.
  • Lack of Content: The game is criticized for being short (around 5 hours) and feeling unfinished, with a lack of meaningful story progression and a weak narrative.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Depth in Gameplay: Users feel the game lacks the strategic elements and depth that characterized the original Overlord games, with a more linear upgrade system that doesn't allow for meaningful customization.
  • Local Co-op: The absence of local co-op is noted as a significant oversight, especially for a game designed around multiplayer.
  • Engaging Storytelling: Many players find the story mediocre and poorly delivered, lacking the charm and engagement of previous titles.
  • Meaningful Minion Mechanics: The expectation of being able to command a larger army of minions and utilize their unique abilities is missing, as players feel the minions are now more of an afterthought than a core mechanic.

Summary

  • Overall, Overlord: Fellowship of Evil is viewed as a disappointing entry in the franchise, failing to capture the charm and engaging gameplay of its predecessors, leading many fans to recommend sticking to the original Overlord games.
