ZeniMax Online Studios is a development team that has established itself in the video game industry with the MMORPG titled The Elder Scrolls Online. In 2018, the team began work on its second major project. We are talking about a looter shooter MMO codenamed Project Blackbird.
In Project Blackbird, the action was to be viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP). The production would transport us to a science fiction universe inspired by cinema noir and reminiscent of Blade Runner.
Over the years, the project was developed and the team working on it went from strength to strength, with about 200 people in October 2022. Over time, however, things began to get complicated. As late as March 2025, representatives of Microsoft (which had meanwhile acquired ZeniMax Online Studios) were said to be enthusiastic about Blackbird (as unofficial reports said), and the team developing it had grown to 300 os?b. Nevertheless, in July 2025, it was announced that the entire project had been canceled. In addition, a wave of layoffs passed through the company. At the same time, Matt Firor stepped down from the position of its head, who was replaced by Joseph Burba.
In January 2026, two-minute-long video footage of the game world was released. It brought to mind the game Prey 2, which also never saw the light of day.
