Quarantine Zone: The Last Check is a simulation game with mechanics inspired mainly by Papers, Please. It also contains additional action elements. The game was developed by the independent studio Brigada Games, which is based in the United Arab Emirates.

Gameplay

In Quarantine Zone: The Last Check we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Last bastion

The game takes us to a world overrun by a zombie apocalypse, specifically - to a checkpoint located on the border of the evacuation zone and the rest of the city, where the living dead roam. Given that this is the last line of defense for people against zombies, the security measures in place here are also extraordinary, which means that only few of the survivors get a chance to make it to the other side.

Checking the survivors

During the game, we play as a soldier whose task is to meticulously control the survivors trying to cross the border. We rely on help of tools such as UV flashlights, thermometers, and handheld scanners. We can also analyze the behavior and appearance of people showing up. Our job is to detect signs of infection (especially bites) to prevent a situation in which an infected person would enter the evacuation zone. Incidentally, we also thwart attempts to smuggle prohibited items.

Limited resources

Over time, the situation begins to get complicated, as we have a limited number of tests and inspection tools, which makes it necessary to rely on our own eyesight or intuition. The space at the checkpoint is also limited, which forces us to make difficult decisions about who to let in, who to quarantine, and who to eliminate, so as not to endanger the remaining survivors.

Defending the outpost

During breaks from monitoring the survivors, we can instead focus on the direct defense of the checkpoint. Our facility is occasionally attacked by hordes of the undead and we eliminate them using a powerful arsenal, led by a rotary cannon.

WayTooManyGames: 6.5 / 10 by Leonardo Faria

I do appreciate Quarantine Zone‘s gameplay loop. Its mixture of the bureaucracy analysis popularized by Papers Please, thrown into a zombie apocalypse setting, is, without a shadow of a doubt, very unique, and, at least at first, pretty engaging. Sadly, there’s just not a lot meat in it to keep you invested for long.

Loot Level Chill: 7 / 10 by Chris White

Quarantine Zone: The Last Check is a unique approach to the zombie genre, and while it can become repetitive, I still had a lot of fun playing.

TheBigBois: 8.5 / 10 by Zachary Holmes

Quarantine Zone: The Last Check (Demo) is an imaginative and grimly compelling blend of strategy, horror, and moral dilemmas. It’s Papers, Please meets The Walking Dead, with enough dark humor and high-stakes decision-making to make it uniquely its own. It’s tense. It’s weird. It’s surprisingly deep. And it’s worth keeping an eye on. Borderline brilliant. Literally.
