Nearly 20 years after the debut of Myst, the authors of the original game decided to celebrate the anniversary of its release - based on a three-dimensional version of the game, prepared in 2000, known as realMYST. Independent studio Cyan, adjusted its hit to the requirements and capabilities of modern computers, at the same time enriching it with a whole range of new elements.
The game takes place in the somewhat surreal world of an island called Myst, to which the protagonist of the story is transferred through a mysterious book written by the legendary researcher and writer Atrus. It turns out that it is also possible to move between different times. In this way, as we travel through the next four centuries, our hero learns about the history of the island and its inhabitants. Depending on the player's actions, Myst can be completed in many ways, and the greatest mystery of the island is helped by the additional, fifth era called the Rime Age, which has already been introduced in the game realMYST.
realMYST: Masterpiece Edition is like the original, a classic point-and-click adventure, filled with a lot of puzzles. In the new version we can choose between the original, jumping way of moving (which has become a model for many post-Myst adventure games) and free, commonly used in FPP games movement using the W,S,A,D keys. As you can easily guess, the most noticeable change in the game is the refreshed layout. Based on the three-dimensional realMyst engine, in which original prerendered images are replaced by real time generated environments, the creators have implemented a whole range of further enhancements using the capabilities of modern graphics cards. These include a dynamic environment with wavy water, falling rain or swaying vegetation, and a day and night cycle during which we can observe, for example, sunrises and sunsets. The game automatically checks the performance of our equipment, adjusting the settings to its capabilities.
The list of introduced novelties also includes improvements to the original game interface and a flashlight, thanks to which the night exploration of the world becomes much easier. The game has introduced a system of auto-saving and special bookmarks to remember progress. Interactive guides have also been developed to teach the basic principles of movement and interaction with found objects and to help solve more complex puzzles. The list of changes closes with original, monumental game music, remastered in the highest quality 3D sound.
