The Walking Dead: Season Three for PC, PS4 and etc. is the third season of the popular series of episodic adventure games developed by Telltale Games, based on the cult series of comics and TV series. After The Walking Dead: Michonne miniseries released early in 2016, which was a supplement for season two, this time the developers prepared a full-fledged sequel traditionally available in the form of annually released episodes.

Mechanics

Mechanics of the game use the well received solutions known not only from The Walking Dead series but from most other episodic adventure games developed by Telltale Games as well. The gameplay focuses on exploration and conversations with non-playable characters. In difference to typical adventure games, The Walking Dead: Season Three for PC, PS4 and etc. lacks puzzles. Instead of that, the game focuses once again on the necessity to make moral choices which determine the shape of the story. This is supplemented with occasional action sequences.

This latest foray into the franchise was a risk that paid off well. Aside from the lackluster story mode, there is not a thing I can fault Rift of the Necrodancer with. The visual clarity built into the core of the game plays so well with the game’s exhilarating score, and there is enough extra content for players to be more than satisfied. Brace Yourself Games has proven that they aren’t a one trick pony when it comes to rhythm games, and I am excited to see what kind of rhythm-genre-mashup game they come out with next time.

The main pros of the game

  • Unique Gameplay Mechanics: The game introduces a novel approach to rhythm gaming by using monsters with distinct behaviors instead of traditional note charts, creating a blend of rhythm and strategy.
  • Engaging Soundtrack: The original music, composed by Danny Baranowsky and other notable artists, is highly praised, with many tracks described as "bangers."
  • Visual and Artistic Appeal: The game features polished graphics, charming character designs, and fluid animations that enhance the overall experience.
  • Variety of Content: Includes a story mode, mini-games reminiscent of "Rhythm Heaven," boss battles, and a robust practice mode. The game also supports custom songs through Steam Workshop.
  • Accessibility Options: Features like colorblind settings and a bestiary help players navigate the game more easily.
  • Challenge and Replayability: Offers a range of difficulty levels, from easy to impossible, catering to both newcomers and veterans of the rhythm genre.

The main cons of the game

  • Readability Issues: Many players find the monster-based note system challenging to read, especially at higher difficulties. The visual clutter can make it hard to interpret what notes to hit.
  • Steep Learning Curve: The game can be frustrating for players accustomed to traditional rhythm games, as it requires memorizing enemy patterns rather than just keeping time with the music.
  • Calibration Problems: Some users report issues with input delay and calibration, which can hinder the gameplay experience.
  • Underutilized Features: Some players feel that certain aspects, like the mini-games and boss fights, could be expanded upon or improved.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Simplified Note System: There are requests for an option to revert to a more traditional note charting system, as many players find the current monster mechanics overly complex.
  • More Story Depth: Some users wish for a more developed narrative and character interactions within the story mode, enhancing the overall experience.
  • Expanded Mini-Game Content: While the mini-games are fun, players desire more variety and additional challenges in this area.
  • Better Accessibility for Colorblind Players: Despite some options being available, users feel that the visual cues for certain enemies could be improved for better clarity.

Summary

  • Overall, "Rift of the NecroDancer" is seen as a creative and ambitious entry in the rhythm game genre, but it comes with challenges that may not appeal to everyone, particularly those looking for a traditional rhythm gaming experience.
