River City Super Sports Challenge: All-Star Special is another entry in the oldschool arcade series called Kunio-kun (the same name as the main character's) that started in 1980s' on Famicom. The original version of this game was released in 2010 on Nintendo handheld consoles. The enhanced version of this game was, for the first time in the series, released on PlayStation 3 (the game was only released in Japan). The PC Windows version is a conversion of that particular game.

Game modes

The series is about the students of a Japanese high school who, this time, participate in rather unusual sport events. The game offers four game modes. The first one is called Cross-Country Dream Town and this mode four contestants race each other. The tracks leads through streets, rooftops, insides of buildings and even severs. Another mode is On-the-Pole Ball Breaking Competition and our goal is to climb a pole and throw down a ball that is on top of it. In the third mode – Obstacle Room Competition, players try to escape from a room but, at the same time, they have to avoid making contact with other participants. The last one is Wrestling Tournament which, as the title suggests, is focused on wrestling.

Technical aspects

The graphics in River City Super Sports Challenge: All-Star Special are similar to the previous games from the series, released on Nintendo DS and 3DS. The character models are still pixelated sprites that move in 3D locations. The character models are the same as in the original, however, the backgrounds are now in full HD. The game also has an online option where games can be played in classic free-for-all mode as well as in teams.
