A unique gas station worker simulator. In Roadside Research, we play as aliens hiding their research base beneath a gas station, and our goal is to prepare for an invasion while avoiding detection by humans. The game is intended for 1-4 players.
After releasing the racing title Antigraviator and the horror game Order 13, the independent Belgian studio Cybernetic Walrus decided to create an unusual simulator. Roadside Research combines elements known from titles like Supermarket Simulator with the fun of hiding one's identity.
Roadside Research offers a first-person perspective. We play as aliens who have become stranded on Earth and accidentally taken over a remote gas station. Blending into the surroundings with paper masks, we manage two areas: the aforementioned gas station (to attract customers and gather data) and a research facility hidden beneath it (to prepare for an invasion).
The gameplay generally resembles other store simulators: we buy goods (including groceries and fuel) and then sell them for a profit to fund further purchases. To satisfy the clientele, we upgrade the station by adding new features. We rearrange shelves and equipment, restock snacks, clean up spills, and repair pumps, all while keeping suspicion at low levels. Otherwise, our extraterrestrial identity might be discovered by government agents.
What's troublesome is that our aliens have no control over the bodily functions responsible for secreting their green substance. This means that at random intervals, we hear a characteristic splashing sound, and an alien goo appears underfoot. To avoid detection, we often have to clean the store, and we do this using a sponge attached to the sole of a shoe.
In addition to carefully handling customers, we collect the trash they leave behind. However, it doesn't go into the bin but is analyzed for DNA. The points gained in this way are used to purchase upgrades from the skill tree. Eventually, equipped with advanced alien technology, we carry out abductions. Our secret activities also include sneaking around and taking pictures of people.
Managing the station or fulfilling the hidden goals of the aliens can be achieved in Roadside Research alone or in online co-op for up to four people.
Roadside Research was created using the Unity engine.
