A first person survival-arcade game about climbing. Peak was designed primarily for coop and up to 4 people can play the game. We become survivors stuck on a mysterious island. Our main objective is to reach the titular peak on the island which may be our chance for rescue.
Mountain climbing can be done individually or in a team. Games such as Cairn or Jusant allow us to conquer peaks alone, but the independent studio Landcrab tried to approach the topic a bit differently. The game they developed is straddling the border of survival and arcade games and it is titled Peak. It allows us to play solo, but it was primarily prepared with coop in mind.
In Peak we watch the action from the first-person perspective (FPP).
During the game, we take on the roles of characters who are stuck on a mysterious island. The only salvation for them is to climb the mountain located in the center of this piece of land.
The path to the peak leads us through four biomes (including a jungle and snow-covered areas). They are diversified not only in terms of appearance, but also the obstacles that stand in our way. As if that wasn't enough, the game map is procedurally generated and changes every 24 hours, making our journey look slightly different each day.
The characters climb trees and rocks, independently marking out paths, relying on ropes, and also making use of natural aids, such as lianas. The matter is complicated by the fact that we have limited stamina. Exhausting it can result in a character losing grip and falling off the wall (which can be equivalent to death).
On the way, we gather food (admittedly of dubious quality, but still food), which allows us to regenerate our depleted strength and heal injuries. Over time we also get our hands on useful equipment, such as the already mentioned ropes, climbing spikes or the mysterious Anti-Rope. If we use them properly, we can significantly increase our chances of reaching the top.
The icing on the cake are unlockable badges and cosmetic items that reflect our skills.
Cooperative mode is the pillar of Peak and up to four people can play. A voice chat was implemented in the game, taking into account the distance separating individual characters.
The graphic design of Peak was maintained in a cartoon style. This especially applies to colorful characters that only "roughly" resemble humans.
