Release Date: October 7, 2025
An action jRPG with real-time combat, inspired by the classic SNES titles from the 16-bit era. Shrine's Legacy features a duo of main characters and their mission is to rescue the fantasy land of Ardemia. The game can be played either in singleplayer or in local co-op.
Despite the fact that the roots of the jRPG genre date back to the 8-bit era, it truly spread its wings on 16-bit platforms. One of the games that refer to that era is Shrine's Legacy described here, developed by the independent studio Positive Concept Games.
In Shrine's Legacy we see the action from a bird's eye view.
Similar to most classic jRPGs, we explore the world, meet its inhabitants, complete quests, solve environmental puzzles, and face opponents using melee weapons or magic.
The game provides us with predefined characters that we develop along the way, as well as gives us a chance to equip them with better gear (and to upgrade the items they already possess).
Unlike most representatives of the genre from the 16-bit era, the battles here do not take place in turn-based mode, but in real time. This means that our dexterity and reflexes on the battlefield are just as important as the protagonists' equipment and combat skills.
Shrine's Legacy can be played solo or in local co-op.
Shrine's Legacy takes us to the fantasy land of Ardemia, standing on the brink of destruction brought by dark forces. The salvation for this land lies in the hands of the main duo, Rio and Reima. Our protagonists must gather magical elemental gems and restore the power of the Sword of the Shrine and then use it to fight against evil.
The graphics of Shrine's Legacy are maintained in a retro pixel art style.

Of the retro titles out there, Shrine’s Legacy is a cut above. Several games like this may feel like cheap-to-develop cash grabs, or like someone made them just to relive the old days but doesn’t know how to make a good game. I’m critical of this style of game. Despite its failings and mediocrity, I enjoyed my time with Shrine’s Legacy. A bit simple, a bit weak, a bit buggy, but full of outstanding map design, charm, and great ideas. I hope the developers find some success and make an even better game in the future. I’ll be waiting.

Shrine's Legacy pulls you back to the 16-bit era of gaming. With a strong story, great visuals, and fantastic music, this is a game you should try, whether solo or with a friend.

Shrine's Legacy is a pure love letter to classic SNES action RPGs. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel—instead, it offers a simple, nostalgic journey designed to transport both veteran and new players back to a simpler time. Best of all? You can bring a buddy along for two-player co-op.
