Enter the Gungeon for PC, PS4 and etc. is a two-dimensional combination of a classic dungeon crawler and a shooter game, in which the players traverse a randomly generated dungeon. This is the debut of an American studio called Dodge Roll. The studio consists of five people, all of them experienced gamedevs, who decided to build a team, and this game is the outcome. Enter the Gungeon was created in cooperation with Devolver Digital - one of the most important publishers of the indie industry.

Plot

In Enter the Gungeon for PC, PS4 and etc., the plot is simple and serves merely as a reason to begin the adventure. The player assumes the role of a vagabond who travels to a distant planet in search of a legendary weapon, which is supposedly capable of changing the past. Having reached his destination, the protagonist decides to infiltrate the titular Gungeon - a mysterious, ancient temple full of surprises and threats.

  • Challenging Gameplay: The game is recognized for its high difficulty, which many players find rewarding as it encourages skill improvement and mastery of enemy patterns.
  • Replayability: The procedural generation of levels and diverse character options enhance replay value, making each run feel fresh and unique.
  • Art and Design: The pixel art style and vibrant colors, along with the game's charm and humor (including numerous pop culture references), are well-received.

The main cons of the game

  • Steep Learning Curve: New players often find the initial difficulty overwhelming, which can lead to frustration. Many reviews mention that the game is not very forgiving for beginners.
  • Limited Progression: Players express disappointment with the lack of permanent upgrades or character improvements between runs, which some feel detracts from the sense of progression typical in roguelikes.
  • Randomness and RNG: The reliance on random drops for weapons and items can lead to runs feeling unbalanced, with some players experiencing runs where they receive subpar gear.
  • Repetitive Elements: Some players noted that the core gameplay loop can become repetitive, especially if they struggle to progress or if they encounter similar enemy patterns frequently.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Better Item Descriptions: Many reviews criticize the lack of clear tooltips or explanations for items, suggesting that players often need to consult external resources like wikis to understand item effects and synergies.
  • More Robust Co-op Features: While local co-op is available, players express disappointment over its limitations, such as the inability for the second player to choose different characters.
  • Online Multiplayer: There is a desire for online co-op gameplay, which some users feel has been inadequately addressed, especially with new features being introduced only in mobile versions.
  • Improved Progression Mechanics: Some players wish for a more rewarding progression system that would allow for meaningful upgrades or enhancements to be carried over between runs.

Summary

  • Overall, Enter the Gungeon is celebrated for its creativity, challenging gameplay, and charm but also faces criticism for its steep difficulty, limited progression, and reliance on RNG.
