Beyond the Portals is an official continuation of the 2007 release of Spectrobes, which combines elements of a classic RPG and a simple arcade. This sequel does not introduce any revolutionary changes to the gameplay, offering solutions similar to its predecessor. Development studio Jupiter Corporation is again responsible for the preparation of the game. The company is also known for another RPG game, The World Ends With You.

Lovers of the first part of the series have the opportunity to learn more about the fate of two intergalactic officers. Unlike the first part of Spectrobes, where only the character of Rallen was playable, this time the possibility of acquiring control over Jeena was also envisaged. The plot of the second part of the cycle refers to a large extent to the investigation of the circumstances of the creation of portals leading to the distant dimensions of the galaxy.

The actual gameplay is very similar to the first part of the game. Finding fossils of title creatures is a key point of play. The services of these creatures can then be used. Once a fossil is found, the style is first used to simulate digging an object from the ground. Then the player has to blow into the microphone in order to finally expose his prey. Acquired Spectrobes are used during fights, activating the attacks and additional skills offered by them. Only two creatures can be active at any one time, forcing you to adjust them to the current battlefield conditions.

The list of novelties included in the sequel includes, first of all, a change in the way of observing the environment. The game tries more to show three-dimensional charts, which research is required to achieve ultimate success. The player can now use a pop-up map at any time of the game, where the most important targets are marked.

Multiplayer mode is based on a completely new module called DGamer. This system allows you to interact with players from all over the world. Participants can communicate with each other (including voice and microphone operation), take part in single battles or take part in more professional tournaments. You can also generate a three-dimensional avatar, symbolizing your character.

The action continues to be played on the bottom screen of the console. The top screen can be used to display an inventory window, character statistics or a map of the nearest area. Graphics is maintained in the style of Far East anime.
