In 1988, The Bitmap Brothers studio released Speedball, an action-sports game project dedicated to a futuristic and violent variation on the theme of soccer. Two years later it received a sequel in the form of Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe, which has received a number of re-releases and refreshed versions over the years. Over time, the rights to the brand were acquired by the British studio Rebellion, which decided to resurrect it by creating its reboot, the Speedball game described here.
In Speedball the action is viewed from a bird's eye view. The production takes us to the year 2138 and allows us to take part in six-minute matches, in which two teams of six players face each other. Their task is to score points by throwing balls into goals defended by goalkeepers. In addition, points are awarded for throwing through special hoops or illuminating stars located on the sides of the arenas. All this is done to keep people entertained and distract them from the problems facing the world.
In order to be successful, during the games we must not only move efficiently with the ball, but also use passes. In addition, the game forces us to perform dodging and knocking down opponents and other aggressive behavior. The brutality of the struggle is increased by traps present in the arenas, which must be avoided.
The title puts at our disposal a number of teams, among which we can find teams returning from Speedball 2, such as Rage 2000 or Fatal Justice. They differ from each other in playing style, and the players who make them up have unique sets of strengths and weaknesses and cybernetic enhancements predestining them to hold certain positions.
At the same time, it is necessary to manage them skillfully and try not to overtire individual athletes. Otherwise, we risk their injury or even permanent exclusion from the game. The athletes can be personalized by choosing their armor, colors or emblems.
Speedball allows you to play alone or in multiplayer mode (locally or over the Internet). A league mode, where we gradually climb the career ladder, awaits checking out,
