A stealth game heavily inspired by the first entry in the Metal Gear Solid series. Spy Drops allows to complete missions in procedurally generated locations. We can either engage enemies in combat and kill them or neutralize them quietly, obtaining valuable data from their heads.
Metal Gear Solid is a production that has inscribed itself in golden letters in the history of video games, laying the foundations for modern stealth titles. Over the years, the work of Kojima Productions studio has seen a number of imitators. One of them is Spy Drops, a project created by the independent Spanish team Rainy Night Creations.
In Spy Drops we watch the action from a bird's eye view, but at selected moments (like hiding behind covers), the camera changes perspective to third-person (TPP). During the game, we play as an agent whose task is to deal with the threat from eco-terrorists threatening to destroy all digital records on Earth and revert civilization back to the Stone Age. Over time, the events we find ourselves in take an unexpected turn.
The game throws us behind enemy lines, allowing us to visit a military base, jungle, and desert. The driving force of the game are missions set in procedurally generated locations, so we can never be sure what challenges we will have to face.
Opponents are our main obstacle during missions. We can eliminate enemies standing in our way, but in this way we deprive ourselves of the opportunity to extract valuable data from their heads using a special device called the Dream Catcher.
For this reason, a better approach is to sneak behind the adversaries and neutralize them quietly without killing them. The situation is complicated by the fact that the places we visit are teeming with cameras (which we can hack or destroy), and enemies are able not only to hear our footsteps, but also to see our target.
The equipment of the main character comes to the rescue and it includes various gadgets, like shoes with sponge soles(allowing us to move silently), night vision goggles, a drone, a stun gun, or even a mine detector. If, despite everything, we decide to leave piles of corpses behind us, firearms allow us to do this, led by the sniper rifle.
As we progress, we accumulate experience points and increase the protagonist's statistics - health, stamina, accuracy, and luck. Additionally, over time we gain access to increasingly better equipment.
We can play Spy Drops alone or in a local multiplayer mode based on competition.
The graphic design of Spy Drops was kept in a retro style straight from the first PlayStation. Nonetheless, it was enriched with modern visual effects, such as real-time lighting and shadows.
