Super Daryl Deluxe is the debut project by a programmer-artist duo composed of Dan Plate and Gary Porter. Together they form Dan & Gary Games. The production of the genre that the creators call RPGvania is a humorous combination of a 2D arcade title and an RPG.

Plot

On the surface, Water Falls High School is just a normal school, but in reality, truly bizarre things happen behinds its walls. The classrooms suffer a plague of portals leading to other dimensions connected with the type of a class taking place in a given classroom. Therefore, the portal in a history class takes us to the dimension of Julius Cesar, while the IT classroom will lead us to a place filled with computer components.

Due to the emergence of the portals, both students and teachers started to disappear, and the new, mysterious principal locked himself in his office. The school slowly starts to depopulate, but there is one person who might be able to help.

Daryl is unsociable, unfashionable, and his shortcomings make him unpopular among students. Being motivated to change, the boy constantly reads his self-improvement guide and realises that the horrible situation is his chance to become a real hero and make loads of friends.

Mechanics

Super Daryl Deluxe is an arcade game with some Metroidvania and action RPG elements. The hero’s guide provides him with the tips concerning using over 45 powers and skills which are crucial for survival in various dimensions.

Just like in platformer or arcade productions, combat is carried out in real time. Defeating enemies translates into earning experience points that can unlock more abilities – both active, used mostly for direct attacks, and passive.

As the dimensions are tightly connected with different scientific areas, we come across extremely diverse enemies, like ancient Egyptians, strong knights, or anthropomorphic rats and robots.
