Twisted Voxel: 8 / 10 by Ali Haider

Tales of Graces f Remastered makes a great comeback for an underrated game. This version brings back its heartfelt story and wonderful characters, showcasing the charm and depth that fans missed before. The combat system is engaging, and the nostalgic art style, similar to Tales of Vesperia, makes it special. While the older environments and common anime tropes might not appeal to everyone, the new features and smooth performance on modern platforms make it enjoyable for both long-time fans and new players.

Nintendo Insider: 8 / 10 by Cullen Black

Despite my misgivings with this particular port, I adored my time revisiting Tales of Graces f. I’d need to see if a Tales of the Abyss port is in our cards to fully decide, but at the moment I think this is the Tales game for me. I’ve caught the bug again, and I really want to comb through this series’ back catalogue. This is probably the best Tales remaster we’ve gotten so far, even if there are parts I wish could have been improved further. As the first title in this Remaster project, however, this is a promising start. If you’re interested in playing this and really want to dive into the battle system, you should probably play it on any other platform. If you’re here for fun vibes, the Nintendo Switch version will do you fine enough.

The main pros of the game

  • Combat System: The game features what many users describe as the best battle system in the Tales series, with smooth mechanics that allow for fluid combos and a mix of A-Artes and B-Artes. Players appreciate the strategic depth and the ability to juggle enemies, making combat engaging and rewarding.
  • Character Development: Many reviewers praised the characters and their interactions, noting that while the story might be clichéd, the character dynamics are enjoyable and well-developed.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: The remaster includes numerous quality of life features, such as access to the Grade Shop from the start, the ability to turn off random encounters, and options for speeding up movement. These changes enhance the gameplay experience significantly.
  • Visual and Performance Enhancements: The game runs smoothly at high frame rates and has improved graphics compared to the original, making it visually appealing on modern platforms.
  • Content Richness: The game offers a lengthy experience, with additional content like the Lineage and Legacies DLC, providing closure to character arcs and extending gameplay.

The main cons of the game

  • Story Weaknesses: Many users found the main story to be somewhat forgettable or clichéd, often revolving around themes of friendship without significant depth. The prologue is noted to be slow-paced, which might deter some players.
  • Difficulty Spikes: Some players experienced uneven difficulty, where certain bosses were significantly harder than others, leading to frustration.
  • Boss Design Issues: Bosses with super armor that can interrupt combos were seen as annoying rather than challenging, particularly on higher difficulties.
  • Occasional Bugs: A few reports indicated minor bugs, particularly at higher frame rates, such as issues with skit synchronization.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Online Co-op: Several users expressed disappointment that the game does not support online co-op play, which is available in other entries of the series.
  • More Exploration Opportunities: While the game encourages exploration, some players wished for a more expansive world map and less linearity in navigation between areas.
  • Additional Costumes and Titles: A few users noted that some costumes and titles were missing from the remaster due to licensing issues, which detracted slightly from the overall experience.
  • More Comprehensive Tutorials: Some players felt that the tutorials were lacking in clarity, especially concerning the game's mechanics and systems, which could be overwhelming for newcomers.

Summary

  • Overall, Tales of Graces f Remastered is well-received for its engaging combat, character interactions, and quality of life improvements, despite some narrative weaknesses and gameplay frustrations.
