Tenchu: Stealth Assassins is a PS1 stealth game, where the player takes on the role of a ninja warrior and performs a number of missions set in feudal Japan. The game was developed by Acquire, a company who also worked on the Way of the Samurai, Shinobido and Akiba's Trip series. This is one of the first three-dimensional games dedicated to ninja, with a focus on how these iconic assassins worked in the shadows.
Story
Although the action of Tenchu: Stealth Assassins takes place in feudal Japan, the title introduces fantastic threads to the historical setting. The main characters of the game are a pair of ninja warriors - Rikimaru and Ayame. They serve as the spies of Lord Gohda and try to help their master in a battle with the demonic sorcerer, Lord Mei-Oh, and his servant Onikage, spreading chaos and wishing to overthrow the current ruler.
Mechanics
The production offers two playable heroes with different fighting style. While Rikimaru focuses on strength, Ayame makes up for the shortfalls in this area with speed. Both characters have the same missions to complete, although depending on which protagonist the player chooses, the story follows a slightly different track.
The gameplay in Tenchu: Stealth Assassins takes place on three-dimensional maps filled with numerous enemy forces. The player-controlled character is equipped with a number of weapons and tools to facilitate silent movement around the locations and silent elimination of opponents. Among the tools we can find, among others, a rope launcher that allows for instant climbing on roofs, shurikens and various types of melee weapons.
Although both Rikimaru and Ayame are well-trained warriors, they don't have a chance to wing against large enemy forces, so they must always act in secret. The production offers ten different missions, and before each of them, the player can decide what equipment they will take with them. This decision is important because in case of failure, the chosen equipment is lost and we have to get it again.
