The Cub is a platform game inspired by the classics of the genre from the 1990s, led by the games from SEGA's catalog. It was developed by an indie team Demagog Studio and published by Untold Tales.

Plot

The Cub takes us on a journey to the post-apocalyptic world which we had a chance to visit in the previous project of Demagog Studio, Golf Club: Wasteland. After the global ecological catastrophe, the Earth is no longer habitable. The richest managed to escape to Mars, while the rest were left to the mercy of fate. Among them was a small child, who by some miracle managed to adapt to the conditions prevailing on the (once) blue planet. Decades later, scouts from Mars arrive on Earth and set off in pursuit of the hero. Our hero has no choice but to run away...

TheSixthAxis: 9 / 10 by Aran Suddi

The Cub is a really good platformer with an excellent use of the soundtrack to really immerse you into the world. While some platforming bits are a little frustrating, overall the experience is tight with a smooth flow. The story is engaging, the world interesting to explore, and the themes touching on climate change and how society deals with it relevant.

Push Square: 6 / 10 by Liam Croft

It makes for an experience maybe just half a step above average. You have played many games just like The Cub before, but you've never played one that looks or sounds like it.

CGMagazine: 6 / 10 by Jordan Biordi

With lacklustre gameplay, and an uninteresting world, The Cub ends up feeling like a cheap knock-off of the games that clearly inspired it.

The main cons of the game

  • Frustrating Gameplay Mechanics: Many users express frustration with the platforming mechanics, citing inconsistent jumps and a reliance on trial-and-error gameplay that can feel punishing.
  • Level Design Issues: Several reviews highlight poor level design, with some sections leading to repetitive deaths due to unclear hazards or poorly placed checkpoints.
  • Repetitive Elements: Some players feel that the gameplay loop becomes monotonous over time, with a lack of variety in challenges and hazards.
  • Short Length: While some appreciate the brevity, others feel that the game is too short, finishing in about 2-4 hours, which may not justify the price for some players.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Better Checkpoint System: Users suggest that checkpoints should be placed more optimally, especially after significant collectibles, to reduce frustration during retries.
  • Skip Option for Radio Broadcasts: Players would like the ability to skip or turn off the radio broadcasts during repeated level attempts, as hearing the same dialogue or songs can become annoying.
  • More Complex Gameplay: Some reviews indicate a desire for more depth in gameplay mechanics, suggesting that the game could benefit from additional challenges or puzzles to enhance engagement.
  • Improved Control Responsiveness: A few users mention that the controls can feel unresponsive or inconsistent at times, which detracts from the overall experience.

Summary

  • Overall, "The Cub" is seen as a visually appealing platformer with a charming atmosphere and engaging story, but it suffers from gameplay design flaws that can lead to frustration for players. Many recommend it, especially at a discount, but caution that it may not meet the expectations set by its predecessor, "Golf Club Nostalgia."
