Adventure game in which we find ourselves in a world inspired by Slavic folklore. The hero of The End of the Sun is a Ashter - a priest who can travel in time and contact with the spiritual dimension. The protagonist has to investigate an abandoned village.
The End of the Sun is a game on the borderline of adventure games and walking sims, which takes its inspiration from the Slavic culture. The game was developed by an independent Polish team signing themselves as The End of the Sun Team, and was completed thanks in part to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
The End of the Sun takes us on a journey to a fantastic universe inspired by Slavic folklore. The game is set during four major Slavic holidays in four seasons, but we don't learn about them in chronological order, or even in the same year - these holidays take place over many years.
The main hero of the game is a Ashter, a priest gifted with supernatural abilities. He has the ability to travel through time and can also contact Navia, the spiritual dimension that affects people's lives. Following the fugitive, our hero ends up in a small and abandoned (at least at first sight) village. It soon turns out that its inhabitants have fallen victim to a series of strange events, the mystery of which Ashter decides to solve.
In The End of the Sun, the action is shown from a first person perspective (FPP). During the game we explore the village and its picturesque surroundings and search for clues about the events that took place here. After learning about the problems the locals faced (Ashter looks back at past events, seeing the natives as ghosts), we can try to solve them. To do this, we must solve creative puzzles that require finding specific objects or manipulating elements of the environment. Ashter can move in time, which is important as we often have to wait for the effects of our actions.
The game world is open-ended and the order in which we do things is entirely up to us.
The End of the Sun features high quality graphics. The locations, which have been designed with attention to detail and using photogrammetry techniques (buildings and objects in ethnographic museums, as well as their natural surroundings, were scanned for the project), are particularly appealing. The game also features a full day and night cycle and weather system, and time travel is also impressive as the seasons change in front of our eyes.
