The third story DLC included in the Season Pass for the dark survival horror The Evil Within released in 2014. Just like the original game, the expansion is set in the ominous asylum in which a brutal massacre takes place. Interestingly, The Executioner tells the story from the perspective of an enemy of The Evil Within’s protagonist.

The Executioner is the third official story expansion for The Evil Within, a dark survival horror by Shinji Mikami, released in 2014. It is the last free add-on for the owners of the season pass.

Just like in the previous expansions, The Executioner presents the events from another person’s perspective. This time around, though, it is one of the main protagonist’s adversaries, known only as The Keeper or Boxhead. A curious feature of this character, born in the mind of Ruvik, the main antagonist in The Evil Within, is that he has a safe where his head should be. It is a metaphor of this character’s dark past and secrets kept. The Keeper is a tall humanoid that resembles a butcher, which is also apparent thanks to his primary weapon – a huge chopper.

By letting the players assume the role of The Evil Within’s bad guy, the developers were able to turn around the playing experience. Instead of running and fighting all kinds of monsters, we become the eponymous executioner who cruely murders innocent victims. The dissimilarity of this add-on is also visible thanks to the first-person perspective, contrary to what we have seen in The Evil Within thus far.

  • Lower Production Quality: Some reviews indicated that the DLC felt less polished compared to the main game, suggesting it lacked the same level of investment and effort.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Lack of Horror Elements: Many players noted that the DLC focuses more on action than horror, lacking the tension and suspense that characterized the base game.
  • Variety in Environments: The environments were criticized for being repetitive, as they primarily take place in the same location (Victoriano Estate) throughout the DLC.
  • Depth in Gameplay Mechanics: Some players felt that the combat mechanics were tedious and could have benefited from more variety or complexity.
  • Voice Acting and Cutscenes: The absence of animated cutscenes and voice acting was pointed out as a significant downgrade compared to the main game, leading to a less immersive experience.

Summary
