A real-team strategy game with RPG and adventure features. The Hive takes place on a planet called New Eden, where refugees from Earth arrived after a global cataclysm destroyed their home. Instead of humans, though, we will be commanding an insectoid race inhabiting the planet, determined to obtain the heritage of other civilizations and become the dominant species on New Eden.

The Hive for PC is a real-time strategy game with RPG and adventure features. It is a work of independent studio of Skydome, being the debut of the developer.

Plot

In 2175, humanity had to face an incoming doom, after the rain of fire turned out to be an envoy of even bigger cataclysm. Thanks to combined efforts of the entire population, humans were able to create a space ship, on which a handful of chosen ones have set off to look for a new home, while falling meteors changed Earth into burning inferno. Refugees managed to reach a hostile, but life-sustainable planet, named New Eden by newcomers.

Despite this introduction, we won’t be playing as humans. New home of humanity has its own inhabitants, and many civilizations had rise and fall under the planet’s surface. One of these is race of sentient insects, determined to reach the surface and obtain heritage of old empires, with the help of the player.

Game mechanics

The Hive for PC is a classic RTS, with simplified base building and economy systems and with battles of relatively small armies (unlike many modern productions, all units consist of single soldier or worker). However, the game add features of others genre to this well-known scheme. Units not only get experience on the battlefield – each of them can be equipped with items that enhance its selected parameters. Buildings can be upgraded as well, using strings of DNA. We will also encounter puzzles that block our way to next locations.

Game modes

One of the most remarkable features of The Hive is the lack of skirmishes, either with AI or other players. Developers decided to focus on the plotline, offering nothing, but single player campaign, in which we lead army of Insectoids on their way to surface through 10 missions.

Technical aspects

Audiovisuals of The Hive for PC are based on Unity Engine 5, and looks quite good, though in technical terms it leaves a lot to be desired. Units and environments are highly detailed, and design of the first ones – both ours and those controlled by AI – doesn’t bring a shame to creators.
