The Midnight Walkers is an online FPS focused on cooperation and gear extraction. The production and release of this title was handled by the independent Korean studio Oneway Ticket Studio.

Gameplay

The gameplay in The Midnight Walkers focuses on raid-type expeditions, during which we explore various rooms of the Liberty Grand Center complex in a team of up to three people. We collect equipment, fight opponents and try to reach evacuation points.

We move between floors using elevators, exploring various locations: from the shopping center, through the hospital, to the casino. It is crucial to plan an escape route and avoid the toxic gas, which appears at random intervals and fills subsequent floors. Contact with the gas significantly reduces our chances of survival, forcing us to act quickly and make risky decisions.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Concept: The game blends elements from popular genres, combining extraction mechanics with a zombie survival theme, reminiscent of games like "Dark and Darker" and "Dying Light."
  • Atmosphere and Map Design: Players appreciate the dark, immersive environments and the unique verticality of the multi-floor building, which adds strategic depth to exploration and extraction.
  • Active Development: The developers are responsive to player feedback, frequently releasing updates and patches, which instills hope for future improvements.
  • Variety of Classes: The game features different character classes with unique abilities, allowing for diverse playstyles.
  • Affordable Price: The game is considered reasonably priced for an early access title, making it accessible to a wider audience.

The main cons of the game

  • Balancing Issues: Many players report significant imbalances between classes, particularly with some classes being overpowered (e.g., "Brick") while others feel underwhelming. The PvP and PvE balance also needs refinement.
  • Loot System: The loot experience is criticized for being unrewarding, with players often finding low-quality items despite significant effort. This issue is compounded by reports of long search times for loot.
  • Combat Mechanics: The melee combat is described as clunky and slow, lacking depth and responsiveness. Players feel that the lack of dodge or block mechanics detracts from the overall combat experience.
  • Player Count: Low player counts lead to matchmaking issues, with many lobbies being empty or filled with unbalanced teams, making it difficult for new players to find matches.
  • Technical Issues: Players have experienced crashes, lag spikes, and bugs that hinder gameplay, particularly in group play.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • PvE Mode: Many players express a desire for a dedicated PvE mode, allowing those who prefer to avoid PvP encounters a way to enjoy the game without the pressure of player interactions.
  • Boss Fights: The absence of boss encounters is noted as a significant missing element that could enhance gameplay and provide more engaging challenges.
  • Improved Tutorial and UI: Users suggest that the game would benefit from a more comprehensive tutorial to help new players understand mechanics and systems better, as well as a streamlined user interface for easier navigation.
  • More Game Modes: There is a call for additional game modes, including options for larger team sizes beyond the current trio setup, to enhance cooperative play.
  • Enhanced Combat Mechanics: Players want improvements to the combat system, including the introduction of blocking or parrying mechanics to add depth to melee encounters.

Summary

  • Overall, while "The Midnight Walkers" shows promise with its unique concept and active development, it faces significant challenges in balance, combat mechanics, and player engagement that need to be addressed for the game to thrive in the long term.
