TransOcean: The Shipping Company is a strategic economic game created by the German company astragon. In production, we take on the position of the president of a transport company, which transports a variety of goods by sea and we try to fulfil the most lucrative contracts, which allow for the continuous development of the company. We operate in 55 ports all over the world - each of them has a different specialization and capacity to accommodate ships of different sizes.

Starting the game, we have at our disposal only a few of the smallest units and licenses to transport the basic and cheapest goods. Along with the execution of subsequent orders and their timely delivery, other manufacturers come to us, and the transported cargoes become definitely more attractive from a financial and prestigious point of view.

The main pros of the game

  • Core Gameplay Mechanics: Many players find the core mechanics of managing ships, trading goods, and completing contracts enjoyable and satisfying.
  • Visuals and Experience: The game is noted for its good graphics and immersive experience of sailing in and out of ports.
  • Addictive Nature: Several reviews highlight the game as addictive, particularly for fans of management simulations like "Ports of Call."
  • Management Aspects: Players appreciate the management aspect and the sense of building a shipping empire over time.
  • Replayability: The game is considered fun and engaging enough to warrant multiple playthroughs.

The main cons of the game

  • Artificial Difficulty: Many users criticize the game for its reliance on random events (RNG) that can lead to frustrating gameplay, such as unexpected pirate attacks and penalties from the investor.
  • Tedious Micromanagement: Players feel that the micromanagement of ships, especially during docking and loading/unloading, becomes repetitive and tedious over time.
  • Unfair Mechanics: Instances of ships catching fire or facing penalties for random reasons contribute to a sense of unfairness in the gameplay.
  • Investor Challenges: The investor's demands are seen as overly punishing, often leading to significant financial penalties that can derail progress.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Risk Mitigation Options: Users express a desire for more ways to mitigate risks, such as hiring security for ships to prevent pirate attacks, rather than relying solely on late-game upgrades.
  • Simplified Management: A call for higher-level management options to reduce micromanagement and make gameplay smoother, allowing players to focus on strategic decisions rather than tedious tasks.
  • Improved Docking Mechanics: Many players want better docking mechanics that do not involve tedious mini-games or repetitive actions, especially since automatic docking incurs significant costs.
  • Optimization for User Experience: Suggestions include reducing the number of clicks required for certain actions and providing more information about contracts and ship statuses to enhance gameplay efficiency.

Summary

  • Overall, while TransOcean: The Shipping Company has a solid foundation with engaging mechanics and visuals, it suffers from issues related to artificial difficulty, micromanagement, and a lack of options to streamline gameplay.
