The threat of being swallowed up by the ocean is a problem that residents of numerous islands far from the larger land masses must face. In Under the Island, an action RPG from independent German Slime King Games, we take on the role of a heroine named Nia. Together with her companion Avocado, the protagonist seeks a way to confront the forces of nature and save Seashell Island from sinking.

Gameplay

In Under the Island we view the action in a top-down view. Wandering through the piece of land at our disposal, we get to know its inhabitants and their stories, perform tasks, solve puzzles and face enemies. The adventure leads through various biomes, while its rhythm is determined by changing times of day and weather conditions. Among the locations visited we find dangerous caves, greenhouses and sawmills.

Gamer Social Club: 8 / 10 by Harry Glynn Jones

Just like with my kids' elaborate games and worlds they think up, it may not all make sense, but it didn't stop me from having a great time. Under the Island is a fun and often wacky adventure game that wears its heart on its sleeve and does right by its inspirations. It's a game that begs to be explored from top to bottom, with the intent of giving the player something to find or do at nearly every turn. I loved my time on Seashell Island, and I think that plenty of other people will too.

Destructoid: 8.5 / 10

Under the Island is a charming, old-school adventure that rewards curiosity with clever puzzles, playful humor, and a beautiful island packed with secrets. Its sense of freedom and discovery shines far brighter than its modest combat, making Seashell Island a place you’ll want to fully explore.

RPGamer: 3 / 5 by Alex Fuller

The puzzle-solving elements — including the boss fights — are easily where the game is its strongest, but it never really steps out from the traditional top-down adventure template, and the lack of any substantial narrative and mediocre overall combat prevent it from distinguishing itself from the crowd.
