Independent Turkish studio Laps Games, in existence since 2020, made its debut on the industry map with the Land of the Vikings project. The team's next work is Valorborn, the sandbox RPG described here.
In Valorborn, we view events from a bird's eye view. At the outset, we create a character (or a whole team, if that's what we want), deciding on its gender, appearance and history. Then we begin a non-linear adventure in an open, fantastic medieval-inspired world, where we will find both bustling cities and wilderness and dark caves. What it will look like is largely up to us.
The title allows you to impersonate a thief, hunter or mercenary, and each "career" path looks different. It is up to us to choose whether we keep ourselves alive by hunting, selling stolen items or performing tasks assigned by NPCs.
The latter live according to an elaborate schedule, traveling, working and reacting to events. Along the way, we also establish relationships with various factions and can become embroiled in their conflicts for our own gain or, on the contrary, stay out of politics.
In Valorborn there is no shortage of opportunities to face enemies. The title allows you to both engage in open combat and sneak behind the backs of enemies. It doesn't always pay to measure one's strength by one's intentions, and it must be remembered that death here is permanent, so if the protagonist (or protagonist) falls at the hands of a stronger one, we won't bring him (or her) back to life.
The character we control (or characters, if we are at the head of a team), develops as we progress. We improve individual skills by simply using them. Thus, for example, if we frequently and effectively "do sword", we become more proficient at fencing over time.
We use the supplies we accumulate along the way to craft items of equipment, as well as to build camps. If, on the other hand, we don't like the life of a nomad, we can rent a house in town.
