Although the Spanish War of 1936-1939 can be seen as a kind of prelude to World War II, it was virtually absent from video games for many years. The Joint Warfare Simulations studio, made up of people who had previously delivered the genre-related project War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition, decided to change the state of affairs. The fruit of this venture is a turn-based strategy game entitled War in Spain 1936-39.
In War in Spain 1936-39, the gameplay takes place on the map of Spain, which is covered with a p?l grid of 5 nautical miles per hex. The title allows us to command our troops at the level of individual vehicles, aircraft, guns and troops. We are talking about units from Spain, the USSR, Germany, Italy and other countries. An advanced artificial intelligence was prepared for the game, which does not rely on scripts, but adapts to the situation on the front in real time.
Although we start the game with small units at the level of battalions and companies, over time we expand our structures, which allows us to take control of regiments, brigades and divisions. Among them we find infantry, sappers, base support units, heavy troops, cavalry, armored troops and artillery. We use the rail system to move them between distant points on the map; trains are also used to transport supplies.
Wanting to faithfully reflect the specifics of the title conflict, the authors developed a system of naval battles. A specially prepared board allows us to watch in action the ships taking part in clashes on open waters, watching the actions of various surface and anti-aircraft guns and ASW weapons. The effectiveness of the units is determined by the experience of the crews operating them in day and night combat. Ship commanders (from gunboats to battleships), equipped with unique sets of strengths and weaknesses, also play a key role.
On the "eve" of World War II, combat aircraft were also more important than ever before. For this reason, both early versions of the Bf-109 and the biplanes that gave way to them appear in the game. Pilots are required to operate them, whose skills, experience and fitness are measured independently of the machines.
Nine campaigns and scenarios have been prepared forWar in Spain 1936-39, varying in their level of development. Among them, a full-scale war campaign covering the entire range of warfare is leading the way.
