Way of the Passive Fist is a brawler game set on a planet called Eiectus. In this inhospitable world, the player assumes the role of The Wanderer – a mysterious warrior who mastered an original, defense-focused martial art. As befits a true brawler game, in Way of the Passive Fist, the player has to continuously go rightwards and fight hordes of enemies by blocking and dodging both their attacks and counterattacks.
A debut project of an independent studio called Household Games – Way of the Passive Fist is an unusual brawler game available on PC, XONE and PS4.
The game takes a player on a journey to a planet called Eiectus, which orbits around a very close star – due to high insolation, the locals utilize photovoltaic cells powering all the devices around the globe. The never-ending heat, however, forces the inhabitants of Eiectus to fight for survival every day. To make things worse, desert thugs, crazy scientists, and fanatical sun worshipers control the place. The main protagonist is The Wanderer – a mysterious warrior of unknown origin, who mastered an original type of martial arts based on the defense. The unusual nature of the main protagonist is well reflected in the gameplay mechanics.
Way of the Passive Fist for PC, XONE and PS4 represents the brawler genre, which has been very popular especially in the 1990s. Gameplay focuses on traversing 2D locations and fighting multiple enemies. On his journey, a player gets to visit diverse environments – from deserts burnt by sun, to the green forests.
Unlike other brawler games, in Way of the Passive Fist for PC, XONE and PS4, the main protagonist utilizes mostly his ability to block, dodge, and counter enemy attacks. Even though the combat system is quite straightforward, a player has to observe his foes as well as learn their moves and tactics – this regards both minor adversaries and powerful bosses. Interestingly enough, the enemy attacks unleash energy, which is absorbed by the Wanderer in order to charge his mechanical arm, with which he can mount powerful attacks and destroy particular elements of the environment.
In Way of the Passive Fist, player observes the action from the side perspective. The 2D visuals feature a retro style resembling 16-bit video games, adventure movies, and animated TV series. On his journey, a player is accompanied by the dynamic soundtrack.
