Wayward Souls is a roguelike action RPG in a retro style, in which players' task is to clean randomly generated dungeons from hordes of various monsters. The game originally appeared on mobile devices, but was also transferred to other platforms. A small three-person studio Rocketcat Games is responsible for its creation.
When entering the game, we choose one of the six heroes, with only three of them available at the very beginning. Of course, the characters have different skills, which also determines the style of play itself. For example, a knight uses the sword and shield very well, a sorceress is fluent in casting various spells, and a rogue is characterized by agility and can use a wide arsenal of bombs. During the game, our heroes develop their skills and find different sets of equipment, which can significantly change the fighting style and effectiveness of the character.
The action of the game is shown in a classic view from above, and during the game we travel through a total of 13 types of dungeons. In each of them completely different opponents are waiting for us, requiring the use of a slightly different fighting technique, as well as a number of traps and other challenges. At the end of each stage we have to face a demanding boss, whose defeat is tantamount to accessing the next level. According to the roguelike genre, the hero's death in the game is definitive and means the loss of all his equipment. Only gold is not lost, which can be used e.g. for the purchase of drums for the next character.
The creators of Wayward Souls were inspired by productions such as Spelunky, Secret of Mana or their own Mage Gauntlet. In the game, however, you will also find numerous similarities to the cult Dark Souls. The Rocketcat studio game offers a similar, i.e. very high level of difficulty, and success depends not so much on your equipment, but primarily on the skills of the player himself.
Wayward Souls is characterized by a retro style graphic design, reminiscent of productions from SNES consoles or Game Boy Advance. The advantage of the game is an intuitive interface, devoid of any virtual knobs and buttons, which significantly facilitates the fun. Thanks to the variety of character classes and randomly generated levels, the game can be played many times without the feeling of fatigue.
